Sheng Da Cotton Mill is a private cotton textile enterprise founded by Zhang Jian in the late Qing Dynasty. Its establishment indicates that China has replaced hand-spun weaving with machines, which has played a certain role in promoting the development of Chinese national capitalism. Sheng Da Cotton Mill is located in Tongzhou, now Nantong. There are cotton-producing areas all around. Raw materials are cheap, workers' wages are low, and positive and miscellaneous taxes are also light.
