It is legal for same-sex couples to hold a wedding in Thailand, but they must be same-sex couples over 17 years old, and one of them must be of Thai nationality. For example, same-sex couples in Thailand recently held a grand wedding in Bangkok. After many twists and turns, they finally got married and entered the marriage hall under the witness of relatives and friends.
On the 8th, the Thai Cabinet approved a bill to allow same-sex couples to register for marriage, and agreed to amend relevant laws to ensure that same-sex couples enjoy the same rights as heterosexual couples.
According to the Act, same-sex couples who have reached the age of 17 and one or both of them are Thai nationals can voluntarily register for marriage. Same-sex couples enjoy the same legal rights as married couples, including personal property and common property.
Minors can be registered as same-sex spouses, but they must obtain the consent of their parents, guardians or courts in advance. After the registration is completed, underage same-sex spouses will also be regarded as adult spouses. Same-sex couples can adopt children. When one spouse dies, the other spouse enjoys the same inheritance rights as traditional married couples. In addition, the provisions on spouse, family and children in the law also apply to same-sex spouses.
Some of the main points of the bill include:
1, same-sex couples who agree to register a partnership must be at least 17 years old, and at least one of them must be a Thai national;
2. If the same-sex couple is a minor, the consent of parents, guardians or the court must be obtained;
3. Either party in the same-sex partnership can represent the other party, just like heterosexual couples.
4. Same-sex couples can adopt a child;
5. If one of them dies, the surviving spouse enjoys the same rights and obligations as the surviving spouse of the opposite sex.
