Xuanwei City is located in the northeast of Yunnan Province, and it is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Qujing City, Yunnan Province. Located at103 35' ~104 40' east longitude and 25 53' ~ 26 44' north latitude, it borders Panzhou City, Guizhou Province in the east, Fuyuan County and Zhanyi District in the south, Huize County across Niulan River in the west and Weining and Shuicheng County in Guizhou Province in the north.

As of 2008, the total area of Xuanwei City is 6069.88 square kilometers, accounting for about 1.58% of the total area of Yunnan Province. The urban area is 102km away from Qujing Municipal Government Station and 204km away from Kunming.

Xuanwei is rich in tourism resources, and its scenic spots mainly include Dongshan Park (a provincial scenic spot), Wanshui Park, Meihuan Mountain Park, Kedu Ancient Town, Laibin Longdong, Xishan Forest Park, Daxiangshui and Rong Feng Sunrise. Xuanwei specialty "Xuanwei Ham" is well-known at home and abroad.

The main climate characteristics of Xuanwei City are no severe cold in winter, no coolness in summer, small annual temperature difference, large daily temperature difference and unclear four seasons. This is because Xuanwei's summer, autumn, winter and spring are influenced by maritime and continental air masses respectively, forming a low-latitude plateau monsoon climate with multiple climatic zones of north subtropical zone, south temperate zone and middle temperate zone.
