As one of the traditional festivals of the Chinese nation, the Dragon Boat Festival in Pingtang County, Qiannan, Guizhou Province is famous for its custom of playing and racing dragon boats.

Playing with hoses and splashing auspicious water began in Pingtang County during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty. This is a folk activity of local residents praying for rain because of drought more than 600 years ago, which has continued to this day and is famous for its unique folk customs.

Early Buyi ancestors did not have the ability to predict and influence the climate. In order to make the living environment more conducive to agricultural production, Buyi ancestors encountered drought and prayed to God to bring good weather, bumper crops, healthy and happy life and all the best.

After the founding of People's Republic of China (PRC), the Buyi people in Pingtang County lived a stable life and gradually developed this folk activity for a long time. In recent years, the people's government of Pingtang County has strengthened the development of local tourism, and made great efforts to create the development ideas of national culture and natural original ecological tourism, so that playing with water dragons, an activity with strong national characteristics, can be preserved and passed down to this day.
