New Year's Day Customs in Jinzhong, Shanxi
So far, this custom has been circulating in Taigu County-

The second day of the first month is the day of ancestor worship. If there is a funeral in my family or a relative's family for less than three years, a mourning ceremony will be held. This is called "being a second day student". On this day, it is forbidden to pay New Year greetings, especially to eat at other people's homes.

On the third and fourth day of the first month, the daughter went back to her mother's house, the son-in-law went to visit her mother-in-law, and the nephew went to visit her uncle. People walk around to pay New Year's greetings as usual.

In many counties and cities in Shanxi, even on the second day of New Year's Day, most people worship their mother-in-law and father-in-law, and Du Taigu goes to the grave on this day. Why?

Here's a little story. It is said that in the Southern Song Dynasty, there were 1 10,000 farmers and 90,000 merchants working in Taigu alone, so Taigu merchants gained the reputation of Golden Taigu. At that time, Taigu was divided into big scales and small scales. At that time, Yue Jiajun camped here to protect Taigu merchants in case the Mongolian Tartars invaded.

A group of Mongolian soldiers passed by here and saw Taigu as rich as oil. They were moved to rob and fought with Yue Jiajun. Yue Jiajun's rival Mongolian soldiers hit Lingshikou all the way. I don't know that Yue Jiajun chased the Mongolian soldiers with his front foot, and another part of the Mongolian hind feet came again. That day happened to be the end of the year. Every family posted Spring Festival couplets, hung red lights, and watched the New Year around the stove with joy. Suddenly, ShaSheng foaming at the mouth. Mongolian soldiers are armed with knives and guns. They kill everyone they see and shoot at the beginning. The scene is very tragic.

Yue Jiajun, who chased him to Henan, immediately led his troops back to Taigu after hearing the scout report that Taigu was killed, and arrived in Mianshan on New Year's Eve. Mongolian soldiers stationed in Taigu sent spies to spy on them. Seeing that Yue Jiajun was all tired and weak, they went back and told their leader. Mongolia first calculated that such an army could not be completed in two days, so it ordered soldiers and teenagers to get drunk until the first morning of the first day.

As a result, Mongolian soldiers ate all the food and wine prepared by each family around the stove, and then fell asleep on the ground. Yue Jiajun, in fact, used charming tactics and deliberately let the soldiers loose. When it was dark, the soldiers were ordered to have a big meal. Then take off the small sandbags stuck under your feet during the day. In this way, everyone is full and light, walking like flying. Less than four o'clock, Yue Jiajun surrounded Tai Koo Shing.

Yue Jiajun first sent dozens of elite soldiers to climb the wall and enter the city, and agreed to ring the bell at the fifth watch to attack the enemy from the inside. Those Mongolian soldiers are still drunk in their dreams. Suddenly I heard the bell and drum ringing, and I panicked. Whatever they saw, they raised their knives and killed them. At dawn, they found themselves killed by their own people. The Mongolian leader knew that the event was not good, and he fought out from the East Gate with the defeated soldiers. Yue Jiajun gave chase, and finally only a few Mongolian soldiers fled back to the base camp.

On the second day of the Lunar New Year, after Yue Jiajun won the battle, people living in the city returned to Beijing to visit relatives. It's very sad to see someone you love killed. Everyone is busy collecting bodies. As it was the second day of the following year, we decided to designate this day as "Tomb Sweeping Day".

Taigu people still follow the custom of going to the grave on the second day of junior high school to commemorate this painful history hundreds of years ago.
