Originally a part of Dianchi Lake, it was originally called "Caihaizi". It was after the dredging in Haikou in Yuan Dynasty that the water level of Dianchi Lake was greatly reduced and it was gradually separated from Dianchi Lake. But it is still "broken", and there are still rivers connected with Dianchi Caohai through Honghuaqiao. At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, Cuihu expanded westward and was surrounded by the city.

Mu Ying, who was guarding Yunnan, once stationed troops here, and thousands of military horses often bathed in the river beside the lake, so this river was named "Xima River". Because the groundwater in the lake keeps gushing out, it is also called "Jiulong Pool". In the mid-Ming Dynasty, some people planted lotus flowers in the lake. When the lotus flowers were in full bloom, it became a tourist attraction.

During the reign of Emperor Kangxi in Qing Dynasty, Governor Fan and the Governor built a pavilion in Cuihu and a "Biyi Pavilion" on the island. Since then, Cuihu has become a scene in Kunming. During the light years of the Qing Dynasty and the early years of the Republic of China, two banks were built in the lake, which ran across the east, west, north and south, forming a cross, and then Cuihu gradually became a famous tourist area.

In the early years of the Republic of China, Cuihu was turned into a park, and later turned into a military camp and an institution. After 1950s, Cuihu Lake has become one of the main parks in the city after many renovations by the government.
