Taiwanese opera, commonly known as xiang opera in southern Fujian, is one of the traditional local operas in Minnan language family and one of the national intangible cultural heritages. Gezai Opera is a Minnan dialect opera based on Jin Song Minnan dialect songs, which absorbs the nutrition of Liyuan Opera, Beiguan Opera, Gaojia Opera, Chaoju Opera and Beijing Opera. At the beginning of the 20th century, Taiwanese opera flourished on the island of Taiwan Province Province, and soon spread to Xiamen, and quickly spread to places where overseas Chinese live in southern Fujian and Southeast Asia.
On May 20th, 2006, with the approval of the people of China and the State Council, Gezai Opera was listed in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage, numbered Ⅳ-64.
