Yuanyang county has a long history. Wu Yang County was established in the Qin Dynasty and Wuyuan County was established in the Western Han Dynasty. 1950 March, Wu Yang and Wu Yuan counties merged to form Yuanyang county.
The county now governs 3 towns 14 townships, with an area of 1339 square kilometers and a total population of 680,000.

There are a number of historical and cultural relics such as Maosui's hometown, Chenping Temple, Bolangsha Site, Linglong Pagoda, and Xiajiayuan in Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Bolangsha Forest Park, which faces Zhengzhou across the river, is a provincial-level forest park integrating sightseeing, leisure and holiday, culture and entertainment, and popular science education. Now the main scenic spots in the park are ten thousand mu of locust tree forest and elk free-range base.
The ecological protection forest along the Yellow River levee 100 meter will be built into a green corridor for tourism, leisure and fishing.
