Peiying Middle School, one of the oldest middle schools in Yangcheng, has passed 129 years.
The establishment of this middle school is quite legendary. About 130 years ago, an American named Dr. Henry V. Noyes crossed the ocean 100 days and came to Huaxiang, Guangzhou to sow the seeds of new learning. Now in Guangzhou, Taishan, Jiangmen, Hong Kong, Vancouver, Canada and other places, schools named after "Peiying" have been opened, all of which originated from "Peiying" in Guangzhou.
Peiying Middle School is one of the earliest middle schools with modern educational ideas in Guangzhou. There are both knowledgeable foreign teachers and China scholars who have returned from overseas. They set up early laboratories in middle schools, vigorously promoted modern sports, trained many national men's volleyball players and won the reputation of "Shaolin Volleyball".
It is also an endless school with a lot of trouble. From listening to the piano in Song Yuan Garden to the eternal lights on Hong Kong Island; From the solid footprint of Qujiang in Shaoguan to the bamboo string songs of Shuangxi Mountain in Lian County, it is an epic migration history.
Today, there are no tiles in Song Ting Garden. In Baihedong, Peiying Middle School continues to write a century-old history. Looking back on the development of Peiying, we seem to feel the pulse of modern education in Guangzhou.
Huaxiang is rooted in the integration of Chinese and western cultures.
Dr. Henry V. Noyes, the originator of Peiying Middle School, was born in a poor peasant family in the United States. 1866, he was instructed by the Presbyterian Church in the United States to come to China to preach and promote learning. He sailed across the sea in a small sailboat 109 before arriving in Hong Kong, and then began to preach in the Pearl River Basin.
Set up an account in the street to teach western learning.
At that time, people didn't know what western learning was, so Dr. Henry V. Noyes decided to start with Mongolian learning. He opened an account in the street of Xia Ji. At first, there were only a few students. 1879 An He Tang was opened in Tongde Street, offering courses such as mathematics, science and English, and the number of students gradually increased. With the further increase in the number of students, 1887, Yin, one of the founders of Lingnan University, bought a flower garden of more than 33,000 square meters and renamed it Peiying College.
Song Ting Garden is the place where Zhang Weiping, a patriotic poet in the late Qing Dynasty, resigned and retired. "Peng is related to the east, and there are misty rains and famous Tianjin in the west. The sound of books and the sound of piano, birds and flowers are always pleasant." The school song of Peiying Middle School, which has been circulated for more than a hundred years, depicts the beautiful scenery around Tingsong Garden at that time. Guan Peng refers to Xiao Peng Xian Ge, where Kang Youwei studied as a child, and Jin Ming, Yu Yan refers to Datong Yu Yan, one of the eight scenic spots in Yangcheng in the past. Dr. Henry V. Noyes chose such a beautiful and elegant place to run a school, which shows his good intentions.
Peiying College is a boys' school. The early academies were ecclesiastical, divided into primary schools, middle schools and Shinto schools. 19 12. Later, Fu Shishi, the principal of Peiying Middle School, was admitted to the second grade of Peiying Primary School. He recalled that in addition to Chinese, there were other courses in the academy, such as geography, history, graphics and music, which made him feel fresh and interesting. What made him most happy was that he didn't have to memorize textbooks.
A collection of famous teachers with rigorous scholarship
19 19, Peiying College was renamed as a middle school, and the school board appointed a manager to preside over the school administration, which was the beginning of the China management of Peiying Middle School. 1In the autumn of 926, Peiying Middle School was officially handed over to the Guangdong Federation of Chinese Christian Churches, and this middle school was completely turned into a school run by China people.
Peiying Middle School was famous in the 1920s and 1930s. The facilities here are complete, the laboratory was set up earlier, all kinds of experimental instruments and equipment are perfect, and vocational education is emphasized. According to students' wishes, they are divided into classes such as general, literature and history, English, business and normal school. More importantly, a group of famous teachers, scholars and scholars have gathered here. They are knowledgeable and have different styles. Many of them have the background of studying abroad, forming a unique landscape.
Guan, the first principal in China, studied in the United States. He looks extraordinary, versatile, solemn at ordinary times, does not joke, pays attention to punctuality and efficiency, and has American style Ye Qifang, a famous translator and journalism professor in China, is also the principal. When he speaks, it is like flowing water, and it is also very harmonious and humorous. He analyzed the problems in detail and expressed his feelings beautifully. Xu Gantang, a former provost, was a juror in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. At the same time, he also studied in the United States, specializing in mathematics, and made achievements in both old and new knowledge. He teaches the history of China and never takes textbooks or handouts. As soon as he was in class, he gushed, quoted classics, and quoted classics in every nuance.
In addition, there are famous educator Chen Qiyuan, famous Yi-ology scholar Li, and Lin Songsheng, who is known as one of the "four kings" in Guangzhou's mathematics field ... These famous teachers have deepened the cultural heritage of Peiying Middle School and made it show an interesting and unique side in the intersection and collision of Chinese and Western cultures.
"Volleyball Shaolin" Transport Star
In the 1920s and 1930s, Peiying Middle School not only paid attention to imparting practical knowledge, but also was famous for exercising students' physique and strengthening sports.
19 17 alumnus Chen siqi recalled that at that time, regardless of spring, summer, autumn and winter, the wake-up bell rang at 6 o'clock every morning on time, and within five minutes, he would appear downstairs to prepare for morning exercises. When doing morning exercises, even in winter, only shorts and thin clothes are allowed. After the training, everyone must run around the playground. At that time, there was an American teacher named Mu Meiling who graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Besides teaching English, she also takes gymnastics classes. Under his strict training, a few years later, Chen Siqi changed from "Cuizai" (Cantonese, referring to thin people) in the eyes of former classmates to a "big shot" with strong body.
In such a strong sports atmosphere, Peiying Middle School is full of various sports talents, among which volleyball is particularly famous, and public competitions often win the first prize. At that time, Peiying Middle School's volleyball stood out in the whole country, and 23 people were selected for the national team at that time. At the 1923 Far East Games, four people, including Xie Yinglin and Liu Quanrong from Peiying Middle School, were selected as representatives of the national team, accounting for one-third of the national players at that time, which became a legendary story in the history of world volleyball. In addition, Liu Quanda is the first female volleyball coach in China, and Mr. Kuang Zhanshan is praised by the media as "the father of volleyball in China". Cao Tingzan, Tan Yongzhan, Chen Yingkuan, Chen Zetang, Qiu Guangxie and other early men's volleyball stars in China emerged, and Peiying Middle School won the reputation of "Shaolin Volleyball".
The spirit of cultivating English is passed down from generation to generation.
In the mid-1920s, Peiying Middle School suffered a heavy blow. The political situation in Guangzhou was unstable at that time. 1925 One night in September, bandits broke into the campus of Peiying Middle School and took more than 50 students and teachers hostage. These students and teachers were released at the urging of all parties. After this incident, students who were in shock dropped out of school one after another, and the primary school was once closed.
English training system
flourishing
Frustration often breeds new machines. 1927, Ye Qifang, then president, thought that the flower land was a suburb and it was inconvenient for junior students to study, and proposed to set up a branch school in Guangzhou West District. After several months of hard work, the first branch of Peiying Middle School was established in Xingxianfang, Xiguan, offering grades three to six in primary school and grade one in junior high school. 1928, officially named Peiying Middle School Xiguan Branch. The opening of Xiguan branch was greatly welcomed by parents, and the number of students enrolled surged.
Since then, Peiying's system has expanded like a tree in Guangdong and Hong Kong: 1930, Taishan Branch was opened, which is the predecessor of Taishan Peiying Middle School; 1934 took over two missionary schools in Jiangmen, Kai Tak and Qizhi, and merged them into North Street Branch Primary School, the predecessor of Jiangmen Peiying Middle School; 1937, with the outbreak of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the Hong Kong branch school was opened, which is now the predecessor of Hong Kong Peiying.
However, the school building of Peiying School in Guangzhou is getting old and small, and it is difficult to accommodate a large number of students. At the beginning of 1934, principal Hong raised funds to move to another school and bought the present location of Peiying Middle School Hedong Campus.
Peiying alumni
Save your alma mater in distress.
Just as teachers and students were exploring the wilderness with hope, War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression broke out and the school was withdrawn. 1937, when Yangcheng fell, the teachers and students of Peiying Middle School moved to Hong Kong, Macao and northern Guangdong, and began their eight-year exile. On the verge of bankruptcy several times, at a critical juncture, thanks to the help of alumni from all over Peiying, Peiying Middle School has been passed down from generation to generation.
1September, 937, the Japanese bombed the urban area of Guangzhou indiscriminately, and many British students evacuated to Hong Kong and Macao for temporary refuge. Guangzhou Peiying School moved south, co-organized with Hong Kong Peiying, and rented local dilapidated old houses as classrooms. 194 1 February, the Pacific War broke out in an all-round way, the Japanese army invaded Hong Kong, Hong Kong Peiying Primary School was closed, and the middle school moved to Macau, which was jointly organized with Xiguan Branch, which moved south.
However, in troubled times, a calm desk cannot be put down. In May, 1943, the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education called the school board of Peiying Middle School and told the school to move in as soon as possible. Peiying Middle School teachers and students broke through the defense line and went to Qujiang, Shaoguan. Soon, they borrowed the classroom for free, which was the school building of the Chinese YMCA night school. They have classes during the day and return them at night. The headmaster of this evening school, Wang Yidun, is an alumnus of Peiying.
But in this temporary school building, the students only have classes for two weeks. The Japanese army invaded Qujiang crazily, a bomb landed in the central park in the city center, and the YMCA's house collapsed.
The city was the target of enemy bombing, and the teachers decided to look for school buildings in the suburbs. At that time, it happened that the largest southern garment factory in Guangdong sold 320 thousand. At this time, the principal Fu Shishi immediately began to raise money. They went to Guilin first, and it took them two weeks to raise six or seven thousand yuan, which is far from the goal and the prospect is bleak!
At this time, an alumnus revealed: alumnus Situ Xin runs the transportation industry on the Yunnan-Myanmar highway, and his business is booming. Fu Shishi will discuss it immediately. Knowing the difficulties of his alma mater, Situ Xin generously donated 300,000 yuan in legal tender. According to the price at that time, it was equivalent to about $30,000, which solved the urgent need of the school. Teachers and students resumed classes at the speed of every second, nailing benches, blackboards and beds with more than one inch thick boards in the factory, and gradually settled down.
Shuangxishan
Qi Xin worked together to tide over the difficulties.
However, the stability of Qujiang is only a flash in the pan. 1In mid-April, 944, Fu Shishi got reliable information from the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education: the Japanese army planned to attack Hengyang South in August and Qujiang from Guangzhou North. The teachers and students of Peiying Middle School must evacuate again! China, where are Peiying's teachers and students?
Qingyuan County was the seat of Guangdong provincial government during the Anti-Japanese War. There is the base of the Presbyterian Church in Shuangxi Mountain, Lian County. Tutor Shi Feng An was a senior teacher of Peiying. Holding a glimmer of hope, Fu Shishi took the train to the north and explained to Ann that Peiying Middle School had no choice but to move to Lian County, otherwise it would have to dissolve the school. Shi Feng Ann finally agreed to allocate a large area of land to build a school building in Shuangxi Mountain, and the Presbyterian Church was responsible for funding.
On June 1944, 1, the teachers and students evacuated from the school went up the Xiaobeijiang River to Lianxian County. After ten days' journey, they finally came to Shuangxi Mountain. Teachers and students work together to build a dormitory in a pine-skin classroom to prepare for the resumption of classes. In this process, they got great help from their alumnus Shao Desen. He is the director of Shuangxishan Hospital, the largest hospital in northern Guangdong. When he heard that his alma mater was in trouble, he allocated two nurses' dormitories to Mr. Pei Ying.
Peiying moved to Shuangxi Mountain for more than two months, and Zhenguang Middle School also moved here. In order to carry out the work more conveniently, the two schools negotiate and cooperate to jointly manage teaching. This is the beginning of co-education in Peiying Middle School.
A desolate Shan Ye.
read aloud
In September, 1944, Peiying, Zhenguang and other Christian middle schools moved in, and Peidao, Sheikh and Lingnan High Schools officially started classes. Under the shade of bamboo forest, the sound of books is noisy, and the sound of string songs can be heard from time to time. The harsh air defense alarm still tears the sky from time to time, but after all, it is a barren field, and teachers and students have won temporary stability.
During the period of fleeing in northern Guangdong, President Fu Shishi recalled decades later that it was still hard to hide his excitement: "Every time we sang school songs in Qujiang, Lianxian and Sanjiang, we missed the occupied campus, and we didn't know when it would be recovered! The mood of grief and indignation gave us the courage to carry the war to the end. "
Peiying Middle School is marked by white and green. Even if the war is raging, it can't annihilate white light and green light. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the teachers and students of Peiying Middle School in anxious to return moved back to Baihe Cave.
