Huyan Zan, a valiant soldier who levied Shu and Hanzhong, was born in Taiyuan (now Shanxi). Born in a closed family, his father Hu Yancong was the commander-in-chief of Zizhou in the later Zhou Dynasty. Huyan Zan followed his father's martial arts to get a gun since childhood, and served as Xiao Cavalry as a teenager. Zhao Kuangyin of Song Taizu found him by accident. Mao thought he was brave, and soon appointed him Xiao Xiongjun.

In the second year of Gande (964), Huyan Zan crusaded against Houshu with Wang Quanbin and personally served as a striker. He was wounded many times in the battle and was elected as the deputy commander because of his outstanding military achievements.

In the early years of Taiping and Xingguo (976-983), Song Taizong personally selected the military academy and appointed Huyan Zan as the commander of the fighters.

In 979, Huyan Zan followed Song Taizong and Zhao Guangyi to conquer the Northern Han Dynasty and attack Taiyuan City. During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, Taiyuan City was repeatedly designated as the national capital, known as the "Dragon City" and the city was solid. Song Jun has been playing at the gates of Taiyuan for a long time, but there is still no progress. Just when Emperor Taizong was at a loss, Huyan Zan stepped forward and rushed to the wall to fight. In the melee, he fell off the wall four times and climbed up the wall four times, eventually leading Song Jun to break the defense of the later Han Dynasty. After the siege, Song Taizong personally gave him gold and silk.

Huyan Zan was mentioned in Jin Yong's novel Yuanyang Dao. He is good at making Strafe, and his trademark Juexue is "Huyan Eighteen Whips". It is said that Huyan Zan was surrounded by the enemy when he attacked Taiyuan City. It was with his "Huyan Eighteen Whips" that he broke dozens of pike and finally broke through smoothly.

In the second year of Jian 'an (AD 989), Song Taizong knew that Huyan Zan was old, so he was appointed as the secretariat of Baozhou. However, Huyan Zan, who has been practicing martial arts since childhood, is an iron man who only knows how to fight, and has no talent for commanding and controlling people. Song Taizong had to settle for second best and was appointed as the secretariat of Liaozhou, but Huyan Zan didn't have the talent to be an official. Finally, he can only serve as the head of Du Jun, and concurrently hold the position of Fuzhou secretariat.

In the second year of Xianping (999), Huyan Zan toured around and served as the governor inside and outside the palace. Song Zhenzong had a by-election in the military academy, and everyone said that he had contributed. Only Huyan Zan said, "My monthly salary is several hundred yuan, and I spend less than half of my monthly salary. The emperor took good care of me. I think for myself, I have nothing to serve my country. I dare not ask for promotion again. I am afraid that there will be too many blessings. " Huyan Zan thanked Song Zhenzong again and stepped down. Huyan Zan's conscientious understanding won admiration from top to bottom.

Huyan Zan tattooed on her body is courageous, brave and strong on the battlefield, and easy-going and straightforward in life. He often said that he would like to die on the battlefield. He is tattooed with "Kill the thief with your heart" all over his body, even on his wife, son and domestic servant. His sons still have tattoos on the back of their ears: "When you go out, you forget your home for your country, and when you get cold feet, you forget to die."

Huyan Zan is actually a martial artist. He created a weapon to break the array, drop the magic pestle, fold iron towels and have sharp edges on both sides. These weapons all weigh more than ten catties. But in the eyes of ordinary people, Huyan Zan's personality is a bit weird. In winter, he often pours water for the children and exercises them. When the child is ill, cut off the thigh meat for the child to eat.

In the third year of Xianping (1000), he built a cemetery for his mother, Empress Yuan De, and appointed Huyan Zan as the guardian. Huyan Zan died soon after he came back.
