Due to the changes of social life, the Goulan stage temporarily arranged on the flat ground for onlookers has disappeared, while the stage attached to the temple has been respected and cherished by people because of its solid wood and stone structure and integration with the temple, so it has been preserved.
The stage architecture in Song and Yuan Dynasties experienced the evolution from stage architecture to dance pavilion architecture, and from four-sided view to one-sided view. In this process, Shanxi is in a unique position, no matter from the number and scale of stage cultural relics, or from the stage sculptures and ground stage buildings unearthed from tombs. In Song Dynasty, the stage of Notre Dame de Houtu in Qiaoshang Village, Wanrong County, Shanxi Province was the earliest dance pavilion building in China.
