Jane Eyre packed her things and prepared to go out. St. John waited for Jane Eyre's definite decision in the form of a note. Jane Eyre set out from Whitcrouse and went to Thornfield by carriage.

Jane Eyre returns to Thornfield Manor, which is in ruins, and learns that the crazy woman set fire to the building and died. Rochester was also injured and disabled, living alone on a farm a few miles away.
