It is one of the traditional operas of the Han nationality and one of the popular operas of the broad masses of the people, ranking among the five major operas in China. Pingju originated from the ditty "Lotus Falls Opposite" in Luanxian County, Hebei Province in the late Qing Dynasty. It was first popular in rural areas of Hebei Province, and later introduced to Tangshan, and was called "Tangshan Luozi". Pingju can be divided into East Road and West Road, of which East Road Pingju is the main one.
