Generally speaking, Wang Wei's poems are mainly pastoral, characterized by lofty artistic conception, lightness and tranquility. For example, the poem "Chai Lu" depicts the quiet scenery of empty mountains and deep forests near Chai Lu in the evening, and shows the author's sudden enlightenment in the process of deep meditation. Although there is Zen in the poem, it does not resort to discussion and reasoning, and is completely permeated in the vivid description of natural scenery.
Wang Wei, who is proficient in poetry, calligraphy, sound and painting, is famous for his Kaiyuan and Tianbao poems, especially his five-character poems, which praise the landscape and countryside. Together with Meng Haoran, he was called "Wang Meng" and was called "Shi Fo" because of his devout belief in Buddhism. Calligraphy and painting are particularly wonderful, and later generations promoted it to the ancestor of Nanzong landscape painting. He is the author of Wang Youcheng Collection and The Secret of Painting, with about 400 poems.
