A few days ago, Volvo officially announced that Volvo Cars is actively cooperating with the autonomous driving of the next generation models. It is reported that Luminar will provide radar technology, which will be installed on the Volvo SPA2 platform model, and will be first applied to the automatic driving scene of the expressway.
The Volvo SPA2 platform model is expected to be unveiled in 2022, and the radar module provided by Luminar will be concentrated in the center directly above the front windshield. At the same time, the automatic driving function is provided in advance. If the customer chooses this function, it will be authenticated and opened through the cloud service of SPA2 platform, and then fully automatic driving of the expressway can be realized.
In addition to the automatic driving function of the expressway, Volvo Car Company and Luminar are also exploring the role of radar in improving the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) in the future. It is expected that all cars based on SPA2 will be equipped with radar sensors as standard configuration in the future.
Luminar's technology is based on its high-performance radar sensor, which can emit millions of laser pulses, accurately detect objects in 3D scanning environment, and create temporary real-time maps without Internet connection. In addition, Volvo Cars has signed an agreement that may increase its minority stake in Luminar.
