We see that the moon is not round most of the time because of the positional relationship between the moon, the sun and the earth. There are absolutely no stars in the "arch" here. The distance between the stars and the earth is far greater than the distance between the moon and the earth. Even if there are stars in that position, they will be blocked by the moon and cannot be seen.
