It is the junction of eastern agricultural area and western animal husbandry area in Qinghai province, the junction of loess plateau and Qinghai-Tibet plateau, the junction of Tibetan culture and Chinese culture, and the ancient Tang-Fan road is in danger. According to the South Silk Road, it is an important gateway to western Qinghai and Tibetan pastoral areas. Qinghai-Tibet Railway, National Highway 109 and Qingxin Highway pass through the territory, and are known as "the throat of Tibetan sea" and "the main road of Tibetan sea".
It lies between east longitude 100 54 ˊ and north latitude 10 1 25 ˊ.
It is 4 1km wide from east to west and 62km long from north to south, with a total area of 1509 km2.

It has a continental monsoon climate, with an average annual temperature of 3.0℃ and a frost-free period of 27-7 1 day.
Huangyuan has a long history. Qiang people lived in ancient times and were located in Qiang County in the Western Han Dynasty.
Because of its convenient transportation and important geographical location, it became an important post station of the "Southern Silk Road" as early as the Tang and Song Dynasties, and became a famous tea-horse trading center in Sino-Tibetan areas, known as "Little Beijing".
