Suzhou (Su for short), called Wu in ancient times, is a national historical and cultural city, a scenic tourist city, a national high-tech industrial base, an important central city of Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, a central city of G60 Science and Technology Corridor and an important part of Jiangsu Yangtze River Economic Belt. It is one of the first batch of 24 national historical and cultural cities in China and has the reputation of "paradise on earth".
Suzhou is located in the southeast of Jiangsu Province, in the middle of the Yangtze River Delta, bordering Shanghai in the east, Jiaxing in the south, Taihu Lake in the west and the Yangtze River in the north. Suzhou has a subtropical monsoon maritime climate with four distinct seasons and abundant rainfall. It grows rice, wheat and rape, and produces cotton, sericulture and fruit. Its specialties include Biluochun tea, Yangtze river swordfish, Taihu whitebait and Yangcheng Lake hairy crabs.
Suzhou has a history of nearly 2500 years and is the birthplace of Wu culture. Suzhou people mostly belong to Jiangsu and Zhejiang ethnic groups and use Wu dialect. Suzhou gardens are listed as world cultural heritage by UNESCO. Suzhou section of China's Grand Canal has been included in the World Heritage List. On April 30th, 20021,the National Narcotics Control Commission named Suzhou as the first batch of "National Anti-drug Demonstration Cities". In May, Suzhou was listed in the Top Brand Cities of China 100.
