Personal profile

Yu Chengyao was born in Yongchun County, Fujian Province. He lost his father at the age of four and was brought up by his grandmother. He joined the army in his early years, went to Japan from 65438 to 0920, studied economics at Waseda University, and then transferred to the Japanese Army NCO School to study tactics. After returning to China, he served in the army, 1946 retired as lieutenant general, and 1950 moved to Taiwan Province to run the medicinal materials business. In his spare time, he studies, writes, paints and entertains himself. He started painting at the age of 56, and he didn't learn from the teacher, only from nature. He used thin and dense brushwork to crumple up the rocks, and then many rocks or peaks formed a dense mountain shape. He is a successful self-taught painter, calligrapher and poet.

1989 10 10 On 2 October, Yu Chengyao, who was over 90 years old, returned to Xiamen and Yongchun under the escort of his adopted daughter to visit his family and folks whom he had not seen for 40 years. 199 1 At the beginning of the year, he bought a building and settled in Ren Mei New Village, Xiamen. /kloc-0 passed away peacefully in Xiamen on April 4, 1993 at the age of 95.

Brief introduction to life

When teenagers go to Yongchun Middle School, they are famous for their calligraphy and ancient poems.

19 17 joined the army and became a general. He is in charge of exploring and inspecting the terrain in the army, so the majestic Qianshan Mountain in China is deeply rooted in his mind. 1924, Yu Chengyao returned to China and became an instructor. In the early days of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, he was promoted to Lieutenant General, responsible for supervising the war zone.

1946 applied for retirement with the rank of lieutenant general in the Military Senate of the National Government, and was allowed to start the medicinal materials business until 1968. After retiring from the army, Yu Chengyao amused himself by reading, writing poems, listening to Nanguan and watching exhibitions on weekdays.

1949, he came to Taiwan Province Province to visit Laopaoze. Unexpectedly, the country split and Yu Chengyao stayed in Taiwan Province Province for forty years. During the forty years of living alone, Yu Chengyao devoted himself to Nanguan culture. At the age of 56, he began his painting life of "painting a water in ten days and a stone in five days".

1956 or so, he began to recall and pointed out the "mountains and rivers in his chest" with his own "messy pen".

From 65438 to 0966, Yu's works attracted the attention of Li, an art historian living in the United States, and recommended him to participate in the "New Tradition of China Landscape Painting" roving exhibition held in the United States.

Four Screens of Mountains and Rivers, written around 1969, is a masterpiece of his mature style. The landscape structure in the painting is complex and magnificent. 1970 s, Yu Chengyao's creation was still dominated by ink and wash, and his pen was more free and bold;

In the1980s, he began to paint with watercolor pigments. In addition to the early use of turquoise, he gradually added primary colors such as yellow, blue and red to make the picture bright and vivid.

Personality assessment

Yu Chengyao's life experience and artistic achievements are regarded as legendary and unusual creative masters by most people. He has no special background of learning from others and unorthodox, but with his uninterrupted travel, reading, writing poems, refining words, chanting mountains and rivers, and studying music and opera, he achieved magnificent, plump, profound and agile natural scenery in his later years. Both are mountains and waterfalls painted by China in ink and wash. What Yu Chengyao wants to pursue is not the ink expression in traditional painting, but the true presentation of the structure of mountains and rivers, a simple and frank "true mountain and true water" with overlapping levels and mutual infiltration of shades. The "Yu Chengyao Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition" exhibited in Beijing Jia Gallery is an important treasure of Mr. Wang Ciyong, a famous collector in Taiwan Province Province, including ink and wash, colored ink and calligraphy. With the performance of Yuefu in Han and Tang Dynasties in Beijing, listening to Nanguan music that enriched Yu Lao's life experience, it approached Wan Li, and the world of calligraphy and painting emerged on paper.

Calligraphy characteristics

Although painting started late, Yu Chengyao actively studied calligraphy when he was young. I taught myself regular script at the age of seventeen and cursive script at the age of twenty. He only wrote Cao Kai all his life, thinking that with Cao Kai as the cornerstone, he could write well by practicing official script. His calligraphy was introduced by ancient inscriptions. He said: "Writing is expensive and has a personal style.

Don't follow others. "Calligraphy is like a person. His calligraphy is usually flowing in one go. Words and their structures seem illusory, but they are magnificent, showing a frank, simple but unconventional literati style. The later his calligraphy is, the more clumsy it is, and it has a natural and uncut charm.

Painting style

Yu Chengyao's paintings are mainly landscapes. It comes from his vision of entering the field of painting and calligraphy after experiencing mountains and rivers during his military service. Yu Chengyao talked about painting mainly through observation and into nature. He said, "Look at the peak from the peak. Some mountains are connected by peaks, while others form peaks independently. Most peaks are outcrops of rocks, showing the majesty and aura of mountains. Tu Shan is relatively flat and lacks the stony taste I want to show, so it is only occasionally used to decorate the scenery. I think the peak is the real peak. Some rocks are made of stones, while others are natural boulders. There are many kinds and variations of concave and convex textures. You shouldn't draw a tablet. In ancient times, people often left it blank, which was the result of no in-depth observation. Trees depend on their growth. Only when trees grow and attach on the mountain can it be beautiful and full of vitality. Trees are clustered and listed separately. How to draw them properly depends on your own mastery. Let's look at running water again. The water in the mountain is fine and clear, and you can't see it clearly until you reach the foot of the mountain. I have seen the works of ancient painters in the Forbidden City. They don't know how to give the mountain a real rock structure. Their water doesn't have the flowing force of waterfalls in nature. You must carefully analyze the way water flows down from the top of the mountain. Although you can't see every inch, it must be related and come from a source. "
