According to different regions, keeping warm and freezing in advance in the morning and evening in winter is the key to Taxus chinensis. For a large number of bonsai, you can build a greenhouse for winter, and for a small number of bonsai, you can do a simple greenhouse to keep warm. A simple greenhouse can be made of bamboo or iron in the open space, covered with plastic film and covered with straw at night. It is necessary to add a double plastic film to prevent freezing in the cold area in the north, and a grass curtain can be covered on the plastic film to achieve better anti-freezing effect. Note: Open all the grass curtains during the day, or at least half of them to ensure normal lighting.
water
After winter, the growth of Taxus chinensis is basically stagnant, and its water absorption capacity is greatly reduced. It is not advisable to water too much or too much. In the greenhouse, the potted soil should be kept as dry as possible to facilitate the safe wintering of Taxus chinensis. If it is found that the basin soil is too dry, it should be watered after 10 in the morning or before 3 pm on sunny and warm days. It is forbidden to water it too early or too late. Pay attention to the temperature difference between the water temperature and the outside world when watering. Too high or too low will stimulate Taxus chinensis, which will cause deciduous leaves, rotten roots and even death in severe cases. Water should not be too much, too much will easily lead to root rot.
In winter, yew is watered less frequently and in less quantity than in other seasons. Generally, water indoors once a week, and water the Taxus bonsai maintained on the balcony twice a week. Water thoroughly every time, and avoid watering with "half-baked water", because the absorption function of the root system is weak in winter, and it is easy to cause root rot if it is too wet, and it will die of dehydration if it is too dry. In winter, besides watering the basin soil to keep it moist, the branches and leaves of Taxus chinensis should also be properly sprayed with water. Once the temperature is lower than-1℃, the basin soil should be slightly wet to avoid dry ice and damage to the root system.
Taxus bonsai placed indoors can be sprayed with water mist at noon, which can not only wash away the dust on the leaves, but also make the leaves look brighter and fresher, so that the plants can maintain a certain humidity. If it is indoor with heating in the north, you can increase the number of foliar sprays to avoid excessive evaporation of water from branches and leaves. Note: Do not put it in the heating port or geothermal place.
ventilate
Indoor, yew should be placed in a well-ventilated and well-lit place. When the sun is shining at noon in winter, you should open the window properly to let the air circulate. Ventilation should generally be from 9 am to 3 pm.
Pruning and remodeling
Winter is a good time for pruning and shaping. Pruning and shaping the old plants can reduce nutrient consumption and be beneficial to the safe wintering of Taxus bonsai. Dead leaves and branches should also be removed in time. Note: once the temperature is lower than 5℃, it is not suitable for pruning.
fertilize the soil or land
The condition of fertilization is that the room temperature must be higher than 10℃, otherwise the fertilizer is not easy to absorb. Therefore, Taxus bonsai is dormant in winter, and fertilization is generally not advocated.
