Several methods of pruning

1. Purpose of pruning

Through pruning in summer, nutrients, water, hormones and other substances needed for growth in the plant are reasonably distributed, and the results are faster than pruning in winter. Summer pruning can reshape or maintain the crown shape in a reasonable and timely manner, adjust the density of crown branches, improve ventilation and light transmission conditions, thereby improving the ornamental effect of garden trees and a reasonable amount of flowers and fruits.

2. Pruning time

Broadly speaking, pruning during the entire growth period from when trees begin to sprout to late autumn before the leaves fall is called summer pruning, which is the continuation and supplement of winter pruning. . However, in actual operation, the specific pruning time should be determined based on the phenological period, growth and development patterns of different tree species, garden ornamental requirements, and production purposes, and cannot be generalized.

3. Requirements for different tree species

For some flowers and trees that bloom in spring and early summer, such as magnolia, forsythia, lilac, elm-leaf plum, Tie-stem Begonia, Silk Begonia, and Di. Tang trees, cherry blossoms, roses, etc. should be cut back in time after flowering. On the one hand, it can prevent fruiting or the formation of leggy branches that consume nutrients. On the other hand, the short cutting can promote the growth of secondary shoots, so that the secondary shoots can form flower buds during the flower bud differentiation period in July. , prepare for next year’s blooming. For honeysuckle, honeysuckle, pearl plum, hibiscus, crape myrtle, etc. that bloom in summer, they should be pruned immediately in the late flowering period. For rose shrubs, residual flowers should be cut off at any time to prevent the fruiting from consuming nutrients and promote early development of secondary shoots and early formation of terminal flower buds. Flower early, bloom frequently, and shorten the flowering interval.

Pruning should be carried out frequently, but for those tree species that have difficulty overwintering in the north, such as privet, golden-leaf ligustrum, etc., they should be lightly shortened or not pruned before they stop growing at the end of September. The branches grow well to facilitate overwintering. For tree species with good overwintering performance, the last pruning of the year should be scheduled before the critical period of cessation of growth. This way, pruning investment can be saved and the tree shape can be maintained for as long as possible.

During the peak growth season of evergreen trees, it is necessary to shorten the branches that have grown too long to encourage the axillary buds below the cut to sprout more new branches to enrich the interior of the crown. For palm plants, the aging, yellowing, and broken leaves below should be cut off at any time to maintain the ornamental effect.

4. Pruning principles

Pruning should be done according to the tree, the variety and the time. The individual development and growth strength of each tree are different, and the biological characteristics of each variety are different. The specific pruning methods and times must be treated differently. Trees are in a period of vigorous growth in the summer, and pruning will inevitably involve cutting off many new shoots and leaves. If the soil conditions are poor and the management cannot keep up, pruning will inhibit the growth of the tree when there are few stored nutrients in the tree. On the contrary, if the soil water and fertilizer conditions are good, summer pruning can effectively promote the growth of secondary shoots, expand the crown, expand the leaf area, improve the efficiency of photosynthesis of trees, reduce the workload of winter pruning, and can enter the flowering and fruiting period in advance, shortening the growth period of garden trees. Breeding cycle.
