Lanzhou is located in the northwest of China, the geometric center of Chinese mainland land map, and the middle of Gansu Province. It is a strategic platform for the country to open to the west, an important engine for the large-scale development of the western region, a demonstration area for scientific development in the northwest, a famous cultural city of the Yellow River with a long history, a modern central city with international influence in the western region, and a modernization oriented to the "Belt and Road" and radiating Central Asia, West Asia and South Asia.
Lanzhou is rich in inbound water resources. The inflow of the Yellow River and its tributaries, Huangshui River and Datong River, runs through the city, reaching 33.7 billion cubic meters, with stable water volume, no ice in all seasons and small sediment concentration. The Lanzhou section of the Yellow River has a total length of 152km, of which 45km flows through the urban area.

Lanzhou is high in the west and low in the south, and low in the northeast. The Yellow River flows from southwest to northeast, across the whole territory and across mountains, forming a beaded valley with alternating valleys and basins.
The canyons include Bapan Gorge, Chaijia Gorge, Sangyuan Gorge, Daxia Gorge and Wujin Gorge. The basins include Xincheng basin, Lanzhou basin, Niwan-Ishikawa basin and Qingcheng-Shuichuan basin. There are Huangshui Valley, Zhuanglang Valley, Yuanchuan Valley and Datong Valley.
