Does removal of most of the lateral meniscus require meniscus replacement?

1. Partial meniscectomy of the knee joint is to remove the loose or free fragments under arthroscopy to form a stable and complete outer meniscus ring. Then replace the damaged normal meniscal tissue.

2. Effect: Because there is a stable and complete meniscus outer ring, part of the meniscus' function of absorbing shock and stabilizing joints can be completed. Therefore, the long-term effect is better than that of total meniscus removal surgery, and the surgical patients recover faster.

So whenever possible, try to retain part of the normal meniscus tissue.
