Dr. Zhang Mengzong (pictured), in the case of insufficient artificial skin, hyperbaric oxygen is one of the options for adjuvant treatment of burns and scalds. (Photo courtesy of Shuanghe Hospital) Zhang Mengzong, a plastic surgeon and hyperbaric oxygen center at Shuanghe Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, pointed out that hyperbaric oxygen therapy is of great help to burn patients, which can promote blood circulation of wounds, accelerate recovery, increase drug metabolism and send it to local tissues, and greatly reduce the probability of infection.
Choosing hyperbaric oxygen to reduce bacterial infection
Simply put, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is to put the patient in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, pressurize the chamber and maintain it at 2.5 absolute atmospheric pressure, so that people can inhale 100% oxygen through the oxygen mask carried on their heads, thereby increasing the oxygen concentration in blood, improving tissue hypoxia and promoting wound healing, and enhancing the sterilization ability of white blood cells to achieve the therapeutic purpose.
At present, Shuanghe Hospital has treated 13 patients. On July 3rd, 9 people were hospitalized, including 5 in intensive care unit and 4 in general ward. Two patients will undergo debridement on the 3rd and skin grafting next week. Two of them 15% to 30% had second-degree burns, and hyperbaric oxygen treatment was originally planned, but it was temporarily postponed because the patients developed fever symptoms.
