Pruning and flowering control of Rhododendron rubrum
Dressing and shaping

Rhododendron wax leaves have strong growth ability, so attention should be paid to pruning in time to keep the overall appearance beautiful.

The seedling stage is mainly nuclear removal and pruning. When the branches grow to about five centimeters, the heart buds should be removed, so that two or three new buds will grow at the top of each new branch. Sticking to pinching helps plants to increase branches, make their branches more lush and crown more three-dimensional.

The buds that grow in the seedling stage should also be removed immediately to reduce the consumption of nutrients and effectively promote the growth of branches and leaves.

When the branches proliferate too densely in the growth period, the branches, residual branches and weak branches with too dense crown should be pruned as soon as possible to improve the ventilation and light transmission of the crown and promote good development.

The formed plants should be pruned after flowering every year or before wintering in autumn. At this time, pruning should cut off the new branches, which will hinder the overall growth of the plant and waste a lot of nutrients. Therefore, it is necessary to cut them off in time, and at the same time, it is beneficial to improve the quantity and quality of flowering with pruning the weak branches and diseased branches with too dense crown.

When the growth rate of adult plants slows down and begins to decline, the whole plant should be pruned. At this time, pruning is to preserve nutrients, provide enough nutrients for branches to keep growing and stimulate the growth of new branches.

Flowering period control

The flowering period of azalea wax leaves can be controlled by adjusting the temperature.

If you want to bloom early, you can put azaleas in a warm environment with an average temperature of about 20-25℃, and pay attention to watering azaleas plants to keep their leaves moist. It is best to control the air humidity above 80%, so that the azalea wax leaves can bloom about 40 to 50 days in advance.

If you want to delay its flowering, you can control the ambient temperature at 2-4℃ after the bud of Rhododendron, reduce the water supply, and water it when the soil is dry, which can delay the flowering of the flower. If you want it to blossom, you only need to gradually move the plant to a normal temperature environment suitable for flowering half a month in advance.
