Asian students are conservative, afraid of making mistakes, afraid of losing face, and will not speak easily without full assurance, so they are not very active in speaking, but they are very competent in speaking; American students, on the other hand, talk a little nonsense and say whatever they want, which often causes laughter all over the room.
Compared with China University, American universities read more books. Teachers of each course will send a large number of auxiliary materials to students by email. Some of these auxiliary materials are books, some are papers, and some are compiled by teachers. At the same time, the teacher will also open a long bibliography for students to read after class.
In class discussion, students need to express their views by combining teaching contents and auxiliary materials. If they don't read the materials assigned by the teacher, they will be very difficult or even inaccessible in class. Talk too little in class and the teacher will remind you to integrate into the class. Therefore, when studying in the United States, the amount of reading will be very large, and sometimes it is very hard to read hundreds of pages of materials in a class. I am studying for a master's degree in China, and my reading volume is less than one-fifth of that in the United States, which is much easier.
Another difference is the way students evaluate. Doctoral students in the United States also have exams, but they rarely test memory. They pay more attention to applied and creative testing. In addition, the participation rate of students in class, group activities and small papers will all be included in the assessment scope.
There is another difference that is also interesting. In American schools, criticism is rarely heard and praise is everywhere. Americans have grown up with praise all their lives. Many China people think that what is not worthy of praise at all, parents and teachers will say that it is beautiful. For example, if a child draws a bad picture seriously, parents in China will comment on how the colors are not harmonious and the picture is not beautiful like experts, while parents in the United States will exaggerate and say, "It's so beautiful! I believe you will draw better next time! " American parents receive praise or rewards from schools for their children almost every month. Even universities are no exception. In class discussion, as long as your speech has some merits, the teacher will give a high-profile positive evaluation.
However, some scholars believe that this excessive "incentive education" in the United States also has a negative impact: it leads American young people to be too self-centered and unable to listen to criticism. I have had personal experience. The toilet in our apartment is broken. Call the property management department to repair it. He is a college student (it is common for college students to work in the United States), and his height is 1.9 meters. He found the problem. When replacing a wire, I think the wire he chose is too thin to bear the pull of the toilet button. He seems a little unhappy. After the installation, I tried it conveniently and the wire broke immediately. I said, "Look, the wires are obviously too thin." As soon as he listened to me, he growled, loudly accused me of doubting his "professional ability", and then left in a rage without even packing his tools.
Undergraduate students in the United States have to write many small papers, and doctors also have small paper assignments. But the requirements of American universities are much higher, and the thesis must be innovative.
The United States is not immune from a large number of articles in the world, but it is far less common than China. In the United States, once professors find students plagiarizing, they will be severely punished, such as canceling their grades and informing the department of criticism.
Studying in the United States, whether undergraduate or doctoral, is not in the safe. You can't graduate as long as you don't have enough credits or write a thesis. In 2005, affected by Hurricane Katrina, the graduation rate in university of new orleans was only 8%, and the school did not make an exception for students because of natural disasters. Even Harvard University, which has the highest graduation rate, has a graduation rate of only 97% over the years.
In the United States, there is great pressure to study PhD, and the elimination rate is also high, and the elimination rate of some disciplines exceeds 30%. Many people can't finish studying for many years, so they simply give up. Fortunately, Americans only regard university as a life experience, unlike China, which regards university as a stepping stone to employment. So many people go back to school after work, even when they are old, and get their degree certificates after completing credits.
Comparison between China and South Korea
I. Admission time
The entrance time in Korea is spring, which means that the first semester begins in March of spring, and the university is basically a four-year system. Many times, Koreans will ask me why students born in 1989 should be in grade three, but in Korea they should be in grade two. This is related to the semester system. China always starts school in September, and the first semester begins. China students go to college directly after the college entrance examination (June) and start school in September, with no interruption in the middle, which is very cohesive. It also caused a semester earlier than South Korea. And I went to study abroad in March, so I just entered the third grade according to the Korean semester system.
In fact, these two semester systems are very common in the world, but I think the semester system in China is better. In this way, you can learn more consistently, get in touch with campus life earlier and start learning. Enrich your knowledge and experience. In this way, I graduated this June. I will get in touch with society earlier than Korean students. At that time, I will concentrate on my work and be able to put it into practice earlier.
Don't underestimate these six months. Six months is enough to do many things. China's overseas students are half a year earlier than South Korea's, and they are ahead in training talents and providing labor for the society. The future of the motherland needs a large number of talents. These college graduates are new forces in society and make great contributions to social construction every year.
South Korea has a military service system, and many Korean boys choose to take two years off from school for military service after the college entrance examination, and then come back to school. Because if you study at school for 1 or 2 years, you will almost forget what you learned at school after military service, and many students choose to study again, which will delay more time. In this way, China boys don't have to do military service. This will buy more time.
Second, the overall feeling of the campus
Korean campus is full of modern flavor, and China campus can be described by words such as vitality, tradition and connotation.
The modern facilities of Korean campus are complete and advanced. For example, all classrooms in East Asia University are equipped with computers, projectors and air conditioners. There are drinking fountains, beverage and food vending machines in the corridor, rest spaces, supermarkets, canteens, girls' lounges, classrooms for community activities, keys and shoe repair shops, printing rooms, banks and so on.
Our campus environment is getting better step by step. Campus greening has achieved remarkable results, and various hardware facilities and software facilities have been continuously improved. I remember 10 years ago, our classroom might have only two traditional fans, but now some classrooms have air conditioning, energy-saving voice-activated lights, computers, projection and other high-tech facilities. Perhaps our modern facilities are still a long way from Korea, but we are making progress every day, and our university campus will continue to improve.
Third, the course arrangement
Korean students have a rich curriculum. In addition to their own professional courses, freshmen need to take parenting classes, family classes, physical education class, literature classes, social studies classes, economics classes, etc., which are similar to elective courses in China. I am in Korea and can choose courses freely. I study Mandarin and Chinese, but I can go to various majors to take classes that interest me, and I can also choose parenting classes for freshmen, teaching English to foreign teachers and so on. The time can also be chosen, from 9 am to night, and each time period needs to be arranged reasonably.
Generally speaking, the courses are very diverse, giving students an opportunity to choose, an opportunity to make overall arrangements and design their own courses.
Classes, courses and time in China Campus are arranged, but elective courses can be selected. Personally, I prefer Korean courses. Some people say that when you can make your own decisions, you are mature. Decide what is uncertain. College students always have to learn to do something independently. After all, the future is your own. It is also important to learn how to arrange your own courses. Choosing what you like, knowing yourself and developing yourself is my favorite way.
Choose your favorite course, your favorite teacher and your favorite class time. This free way is pursued by many people. I also hope that teachers and schools can give students a free space to exercise their self-planning and self-planning ability.
Fourth, accommodation.
East Asia university dormitory-Hanlin life house
Korean college students basically adopt the day-to-day system, and only a few students with excellent grades and students who are far away from home will be allowed to live in student dormitories. There are also some students renting houses outside. International students won't get much preferential treatment. Exchange students and international students are only allowed to live in the dormitory for one year, and then they can only rent a house outside like Korean students.
Few college students in China campus are day students, and most of them live in dormitories. Live for four years at a time.
Look at these two ways, each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
The Korean way likes to exercise students' independence. There are not many dormitories, but the dormitory environment is very good, with room for washing, air conditioning, floor heating and bookcases. In addition, the canteen, laundry room, gym, small library, canteen, computer room and lounge are all in the dormitory of East Asia University. The dormitory has 24-hour floor heating, 24-hour automatic drinking water supply and 24-hour power supply. Living in such a dormitory costs about 7,000 won (40 yuan RMB) a day and about 3,600 RMB a semester.
There is nothing to say about the dormitory environment in Korea, but it is easy to feel comfortable and lazy after living for a long time. That's why many international students don't want to move out after living for a year. Many students began to bribe teachers in order to continue living in dormitories. Compared with living in a dormitory, renting a house outside can really exercise people, at least cooking is that thing.
In Korea, you have to pay an expensive deposit to rent a house, and there are places where you don't have to pay it. It depends on your search and communication skills, as well as your ability to distinguish between the owner and the house. I have been living in a dormitory, and I always hear from international students that it is difficult to rent a house outside, a good place is hard to find, the house is too expensive, the owner is not good and the facilities are not good. But this is life and a place to exercise. In a foreign country, parents can't help you, and friends can help you find a house, but everything depends on yourself. You should take the initiative to prepare for your life. Then learn to cook and clean the room. Learn to deal with roommates and landlords.
Only after graduation will college students in China face such problems. The good place of Huada dormitory is to provide a convenient and safe environment for students outside the local area. It is safer for students to live on campus than outside, and parents will feel at ease. Students from the same department can live under one roof from the beginning of their freshman year, get to know each other and learn from each other. If the university campus is a "small society", then the dormitory is a "small society". There are such problems, such as differences in local culture, inconsistencies in roommates' schedules, disharmony in personality and so on. These are the places where China dormitory exercises people. If the relationship between roommates is not handled well, it will be more difficult to get out of campus in the future, because people in society are much more complicated than students on campus. Only starting from this "small society" can we slowly exercise our communication skills and let ourselves grow step by step.
Verb (abbreviation for verb) campus activities
South Korea and China are very similar in campus activities. It will provide students with colorful campus life, such as club activities. Participating in club activities can fully train students, such as learning to plan, organize, publicize and win sponsorship. You can also meet more people and exercise the spirit of unity and cooperation. In addition, schools in China and South Korea will provide places for volunteer activities and exchange activities. Let students have more contact with society.
On the playground of East Asia University, students of physical education department are in contact on the playground.
In recent years, more and more college students in China choose to experience social life in their spare time, which is called a kind of social practice. Experience the surprises, challenges and difficulties brought by society in social practice. Learn how to communicate with others, how to adapt to the modern environment and become stronger and braver.
Some students choose to go to the western marginal mountainous areas to teach and participate in volunteer activities. While practicing and helping others, I increased my sense of social responsibility. I have contributed my strength to the education of my motherland. This strength, this love and this glory will grow with us.
