Li Liufang was born in an official family in Nanxiang, Jiading in the third year of Wanli (1575). He was originally from She County, Huizhou Prefecture, South Zhili (now Nanfeng, She County, Anhui Province). His grandfather Li Wenbang was the ancestor of Qianxiang. He served as the commander of Chengshan Guard and was awarded the title of Duke. His father, Li Rujun, is a student in the county. When Li Liufang was a teenager, he hid in Donglin Nunnery, studied hard, and aspired to become an official in the imperial examination. In the thirty-fourth year of Wanli (1606), he passed the imperial examination at the age of 32. Later, he went to Beijing twice to take part in the palace examination but failed. At that time, the imperial court was controlled by the eunuch Wei Zhongxian and his followers, and his career was unpredictable. Feeling discouraged, he returned to his hometown and built his own "Tan Garden", abandoning his official career. He often visited the West Lake in Hangzhou, painting while visiting the lake, and wrote a series of inscriptions and postscripts, showing the demeanor of a distinguished scholar. He is an upright person, his poetry style is fresh and natural, and his literary works are among the best among scholars. When Wei Zhongxian built the shrine, he did not go there to worship. He said to others: "Worshiping is a temporary event, but not worshiping is an eternal event."

Li Liufang and Cheng Jiasui are as famous for their poetry, calligraphy and painting. Li once said to his friend Qian Qianyi: "It is the first pleasure in my life to watch Mengyang (Cheng Jiasui) recite poems and paint in a boat in a jingshe, with a clear window to see myself." Qian Qianyi said: "I have two pleasures, "In the first year of Chongzhen (1628), Qian Qianyi was released and he sat in the tent to discuss the paper. When Li Liufang heard the news, he held his pillow and sighed: "This can't be done."
