Why is Liaocheng called Liaocheng? What does "chat" mean? Is it a chat?
Liaocheng, recorded in the Spring and Autumn Period, has a history of more than 2,500 years. There are different opinions about the name of Liaocheng. Some people say that "Liaocheng" is named after "Liaohe" or "Liaoshui", which has no historical basis and cannot be established. Because there has been no "river chat" or "water chat" on the Luxi Plain since ancient times. There are no records in Zuo Zhuan, Historical Records of Hequ Shu, History of Han Geography and Water Mirror Notes.

The word "chat" has ears on one side and hair on the other. The name of Liaocheng is related to ears.

Liaocheng was founded in the Spring and Autumn Period, and is located in the western border of Qi, a strategic place. At that time, in order to defend against powerful enemies, Qi built two cities on the border, one was Nie and the other was Chater. The word "Nie" in Shuo Wen Jie Zi consists of three ears, which means "whispering in the ear", that is, whispering. The purpose of building the city is to monitor the information of western neighboring countries and report it in time, so it is called "Nie" city. The other is called Liaocheng. Shuo Wen Jie Zi interprets the word "chat" as "ringing in the ear" and "Mao". In other words, as an important city in the west of Qi, we should pay special attention to the information and dynamics of the border and sound the alarm at all times, so we named this newly built city "Chat" City. There is another saying, which is also related to the ear.

The word "Mao" to the right of the word "chat" in Liaocheng means "kill" in Oracle Bone Inscriptions. In Oracle Bone Inscriptions, it is often said that how many people are killed and how many cattle are killed. "Chatting" means cutting your ears. According to experts' research, Liaocheng was the base of Shang dynasty's business nobles. After Zhou Wuwang destroyed the Shang Dynasty, the remaining nobles of the Shang Dynasty refused to obey the rebellion and attacked and killed the troops of Qi, a vassal state of the Western Zhou Dynasty, in Liaocheng. In order to frighten the enemy, they also cut off the ears of Qi soldiers. These Shang dynasty nobles also built two cities here, one is Liaocheng and the other is Yucheng, both of which mean to cut their ears to shock.
