Obesity is one of the most serious chronic diseases that threaten human health. The survey shows that more than 1/2 adults in China are overweight or obese, and the overweight and obesity rates are 34.3% and 16.4% respectively. There are three main clinical interventions for obesity: lifestyle intervention, slimming drugs and slimming surgery. Lifestyle intervention (including diet intervention) is the first-line treatment for weight loss, but there is no standardized program suitable for China population.

On April 2, 2022, the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) published the results of a single-center clinical trial of calorie restriction combined with time-limited eating and simple calorie restriction to lose weight led by Professor Zhang Huijie from Southern Hospital of Southern Medical University. It was confirmed that the benefits of time-limited eating were not better than that of calorie restriction among obese patients, and the average weight change of participants in one year was -8.0 kg (95.5 kg). The results of this major study will provide high-level evidence for the dietary intervention of obese patients in China.

NEJM Medical Frontier invited Zong Geng, a researcher from Shanghai Institute of Nutrition and Health, China Academy of Sciences, to interpret this study.
