Harbin Medical University was formed by the merger of former Harbin Medical College and Harbin Medical College. It is a key university in Heilongjiang province and a university established by the provincial office. Harbin Medical University is an excellent physician training university, selected for the "Double Hundred Thousand Plan" and "Key Discipline Project with Characteristics", and also the Chinese lead institution of the Sino-Russian Medical University Alliance.

The school's predecessor was Harbin Medical College founded by Dr. Lian Dewu in September 1926 and Chinese Workers and Peasants Red Army Health School founded in Ruijin, Jiangxi in October 19365438. 1April, 949, it was formed by the former Harbin Medical University and the first and second branches of the former Xingshan (now Hegang) China Medical University.
