How to prune peach trees

Main branch pruning: During the growth process of saplings, it is necessary to select well-developed branches as main branches. Cut the main branches to a length of about 70cm and then remove the tops. Leave outer buds at the cutting edge and weak branches longer. Leave strong branches short to maintain a balanced tree. Usually 3-4 branches are left under the cut of the main branch. The upper and lower branches are removed and 40cm of flat and slanting branches are retained. The removed branches are left with basal buds to avoid empty branches.

Pruning auxiliary branches: The auxiliary branches need to be retained on the main branches of annual peach trees. Select and prune them to ensure the growth of the main branches, and control their growth through retraction. Fruit branches should be pruned at a distance of 20cm from the same side. Keep distances and thin out fruit branches that are too dense.

Pruning side branches: Side branches on the main branches also need to be pruned. Select annual branches (or secondary shoots or previous year branches), and cut them to a length shorter than 60cm. To ensure normal fruiting of side branches, the branch angle between the side branches and the main branch is about 60°, extending diagonally outward. The length of the cut should be slightly shorter than the extended branch of the main branch, and the outer buds should generally be left at the cutting edge. Avoid overlapping of side branches and main branches causing mutual shading.

Pruning group: When pruning, cultivation and utilization should be combined. The pruning degree of large branches should be controlled reasonably, and the pruning degree of the extension branches should be heavier than that of the side branches. Pay attention to the direction of the cutting buds and the extension branches to ensure their normal growth. For large and medium-sized branches in the crown, the ability of the group has declined and the base has become strong, and the weak branches can be thinned out.
