① To make bonsai from crape myrtle seedlings, you can use the twisting method of multiple trunks (branches) to thicken the trunk. Use the sprouting branches from the rhizosphere of crape myrtle to spirally wrap around the main trunk one by one, and fix them with strings to prevent them from loosening. After 2 to 3 years, the branches and the trunk will heal together and become a whole, making the trunk obviously thicker and look old and simple; you can also plant crape myrtle seedlings of different colors into one hole, and tie the base with brown silk. Together, the trunks are intertwined with each other, climbed and twisted together, and fixed with strings. After 3 to 4 years, the trunks will become vigorous, simple and strong, and the flowers of the same plant will be rich and unique.
② For pruning and shaping of crape myrtle, intensive pruning is usually carried out in winter. During pruning, the branches should be kept evenly distributed and the crown of the tree intact. Overly dense branches and sprouting tillers on the trunk and branches in inappropriate locations should be cut off. Cut off the long branches to 2/3, and generally keep the branches to about 6cm from the previous winter's cut; in spring, when the new branches grow to about 15cm, top them off, leaving about 10cm of the lower part to encourage the growth of the two-branched branches at the top. When it grows to about 20cm, topping is performed again, leaving about 15cm of the lower part to promote the germination of new branches, and remove all other branches that affect the viewing and shape. After the pruned branches grow into order, cut off weak flower branches and buds that are irrelevant to the shape. After the flowers bloom, cut off the remaining flowers. If they are pruned properly, the flowers can bloom until around the National Day.
