Making and Modeling of Podocarpus Bonsai
Podocarpus bonsai is usually potted before germination in spring. The shape of the basin depends on the tree shape, so it is suitable to use loose and fertile slightly acidic sandy loam with good drainage. The choice of container can be purple sand basin or glazed pottery basin, which is relatively simple and generous.

Pruned Podocarpus leaves are small in shape, resistant to pruning, and suitable for making into various shapes such as spheres and cones. In order to pursue a harmonious proportion, it needs to be pruned many times, usually when the new branch is 20-30 cm.

The modeling of Luohansong bonsai is generally carried out in the dormant period, following the principle of winding first and pruning second. The branches of Podocarpus are soft and easy to tie, and can have various shapes. The common forms are curved dry type, inclined dry type, flat cloud type, cliff type and root lifting type. Branches and leaves can be trimmed into slices or steamed buns.

The binding method is suitable for the younger Podocarpus, but the older Podocarpus can't achieve the ideal effect because of its thick branches and difficult modeling. Strong bamboo sticks and hemp ropes can be used for binding modeling. Tie the bamboo stick and the branches tightly with hemp rope, and then fix one end of the bamboo stick on the trunk, so that the direction of the bamboo stick can be adjusted according to personal wishes, so that the branches can grow in a specific direction, thus achieving the purpose of modeling.

Pressing modeling is mainly to bend and tilt the trunk, so that the tree presents a special artistic beauty on the inclined plane. Note that after bending, the inclined end must be supported by a wooden stake to prevent the tree from lodging. In order to avoid the tree from being injured, a proper amount of straw should be placed between the contact surface of the wooden stake and the tree.
