The crowns of peach trees in the southern variety group are relatively open, and their growth potential is slightly weaker than that in the northern variety group. They mainly produce fruit on long and medium-sized fruit branches, and most of the fruit branches have compound buds. According to the growth and fruiting habits of southern varieties, their pruning characteristics are as follows:
(1) When reshaping saplings, the trunk should be appropriately high, and the main and side branches should be cut appropriately longer and at an appropriate angle. The opening should not be too large, and in the later stage, attention should be paid to raising the angle of the main branches.
(2) The amount of pruning can be appropriately heavier to promote the growth of more medium- and long-fruiting branches.
(3) Peach trees in the southern variety group have an earlier fruiting period, a higher fruit setting rate, and a lower overwintering mortality rate of flower buds. Therefore, when there are too many fruiting branches, some of them can be thinned out appropriately, or an appropriate amount can be removed. The short cut part should be used to grow fruit branches to avoid excessive fruiting, which will cause nutritional loss of the tree, cause premature aging of the tree, and affect yield and quality.
There are some differences between the northern variety group and the southern variety group of peach trees in terms of growth and fruiting habits, as well as in shaping and pruning, but they are not static, especially which kind of fruiting branch is the most reliable for fruiting. It cannot be explained simply by using the southern and northern varieties. It has a certain impact on the variety, pruning severity, nutritional status, external environmental conditions and management technology level. These are all things that should be paid attention to when shaping and pruning.
The northern variety group is mainly distributed in the northwest and the Yellow River Basin in Shandong, Henan, Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi and Beijing. The northern variety group is relatively drought-resistant and cold-tolerant, but has poor adaptability to temperature changes in early spring. For some varieties, such as May Fresh, the flower buds are often susceptible to frost damage and fall off in early spring when they overwinter. Northern varieties moved to the south for cultivation show weak growth, poor flower bud differentiation, irregular flowering periods, low fruit setting rates, and poor fruit quality. The main varieties of the northern variety group are: May Fresh, Feicheng Buddha Peach, Shenzhou Peach, Qingzhou Peach, Eagle Mouth Peach, Weinan Sweet Peach, Shangzhou Winter Peach, Tianshui Qitao, Linze Purple Peach, Lanzhou Chishui Peach , big-leaf white peach, Xinjiang Alatohaqi, late-ripening Hongguang peach, flat peach, etc.
The southern variety group is mainly distributed in places south of the Yangtze River. Southern varieties are resistant to warm and humid climates, but some varieties, such as Hakuho, Okubo, Okayama White, and Tachibana Zaosheng, are also more suitable for cultivation in the north. Flower buds suffer less frost damage, and their yields are higher and more stable.
Okubo, Okayama White, Seed Honey, etc., have relatively open crowns; White Phoenix, Orange Zaosheng, Okayama, Zaosheng Mi, Fenghua Mi, Zaoxiang Mi, Yubai Peach, Ivory White, White Flower, Blue Flower , Yunnan Erzao, Guangdong White Rice Peach, etc., the canopy is half open.
