Magnesium alloy has the highest relative specific strength (the ratio of strength to mass). The specific stiffness (the ratio of stiffness to mass) is close to that of aluminum alloy and steel, and much higher than that of engineering plastics.

The melting point of magnesium alloy is lower than that of aluminum alloy, and its die-casting formability is good. The tensile strength of magnesium alloy castings is equivalent to that of aluminum alloy castings, which can generally reach 250MPA and the highest can reach more than 600 Mpa. The yield strength and elongation are similar to those of aluminum alloy.
Magnesium alloy also has good corrosion resistance, electromagnetic shielding performance and radiation protection performance, and can be recycled at 100%.
Magnesium alloy parts have high stability, high precision of casting line dimensions of die-casting parts, and can be processed with high precision.
Magnesium alloy has good die casting formability, and the minimum wall thickness of die casting can reach 0.5 mm. Suitable for manufacturing all kinds of automobile die castings.
The earliest application of magnesium alloy in automobile was the casting of crankshaft connecting rod box of London city bus in 1930s. During that time, more than 500,000 tractor gearbox shells were produced and are still being produced. In the automobile powertrain, Volkswagen (VW) is the company with the largest number of magnesium applications. The weight of these parts is 17 kg, which is 50 kg lighter than the iron castings it replaces.
