How to treat oral ulcer in dogs?
Oral ulcer is a common ulcerative lesion of oral mucosa, which is more common in the inner lip, tongue, abdominal tongue, buccal mucosa, vestibular sulcus, soft palate and other parts. The mucosa in these parts lacks keratinization layer or is poorly keratinized. Tongue ulcer refers to the oral ulcer that occurs in the tongue and the abdomen of the tongue. When oral ulcer breaks out, the pain is severe and the local burning pain is obvious. In severe cases, it will also affect the diet and make people feel depressed. Traumatic ulcer is closely related to mechanical stimulation, chemical burn or cold and hot stimulation, and its position and shape are consistent with mechanical stimulation factors. There is no recurrence history, and the ulcer heals quickly after removal of stimulation, but if left unchecked, it may become cancerous.

1, incidence rate

The sick dog is a 9-year-old Chinese garden dog. He complained that he was salivating badly, and he has been depressed for two days. When he drinks water, water comes out of his mouth, and he keeps licking his left upper lip with his tongue. He is not active. I don't want to get in touch with other dogs when I go out, I don't eat dog food, I only lick a little milk powder, and my drinking water is normal. So he was sent to our hospital for treatment.

Figure 2 The sick dog is in poor spirits.

The dog's temperature is 39. 2 degrees Celsius, breathing 34 times/minute, heart rate 105 times/minute. During palpation, the dog's mouth showed obvious resistance, unwilling to be touched, and showed obvious pain. Preliminary oral exploration showed that the dog's right tooth fell off, the left tooth was yellow with stones, the upper gum was red and swollen, the oral ulcer was serious, and the mucosa showed signs of suppuration.

2. Case diagnosis

It is preliminarily suspected that gingivitis and oral ulcer are caused by dental calculus. Because the dog has a long course of disease and has obvious resistance to oral exploration, it is decided to carry out anti-inflammatory treatment first to reduce the inflammatory reaction, and then conduct further oral examination after swelling.

3, the treatment process

According to the weight of the dog, ampicillin sodium was injected into the muscle twice a day with a dose of 0.5g, and the mouth was washed with boric acid solution and disinfected. During the washing process, the dog reacted strongly, with obvious pain and no bleeding. Apply iodine glycerin to the damaged area. Oral vitamin B2 and vitamin C, once a day, each time 10mg. Pet owners are required to feed liquid food. That night, the dog licked about 35ml of goat milk powder and took the initiative to eat half an egg white.

On the third day of treatment, the dog's appetite improved, and he ate a small amount of egg yolk, and no oral bleeding was found. Continue intramuscular injection of ampicillin sodium, twice a day, once and a half grams. After cleaning the mouth with boric acid solution, the dog's reaction and resistance are reduced. Apply iodine glycerin. Oral vitamin B2 and vitamin C, once a day, each time 10mg. In the evening, the dog ate a small amount.

On the fourth day of treatment, the dog licked about 50 ml of milk powder in the morning and ate more than half of an egg, with almost no salivation symptoms. Compared with the previous two days, my spirit has obviously improved. I actively interact with my master and can lick his hand with my tongue. No other discomfort was found. Continue intramuscular injection of ampicillin sodium, once in the morning and half a gram each time. When the left upper lip was opened, it was found that the redness and swelling of the gums were significantly reduced, the dog almost stopped resisting, and the pain was significantly reduced. Oral exploration revealed that there was a 2 mm fishbone in the gum behind the left canine tooth. After taking it out slowly, I found obvious old wounds on my gums. Continue to rinse with 2% boric acid solution and apply iodine glycerin. Oral vitamin B2 and vitamin C, once a day, each time 10mg. In the evening, the pet owner softened a small amount of dog food with egg yolk, and the dog ate it all and recovered his normal appetite.

Fig. 4 On the fifth day of treatment, my spirit improved obviously and I had an appetite.

On the fifth day of treatment, the dog ate 50ml of goat milk powder and a small amount of soft dog food in the morning, and continued intramuscular injection of ampicillin sodium once in the morning and once and a half grams in the afternoon. Continue to gargle with 2% boric acid solution. Dogs have slight resistance to the least contact objects, and apply iodine glycerin. Take vitamin B2 and vitamin C orally. Once a day, once 10mg. After treatment, I went home to observe that there was no outflow when drinking water. In the evening, I was fed with broken chicken breast mixed with dog food. I ate it faster than in the past few days and ate it all.

On the eighth day of treatment, the pet owner fed normal dog food in the morning, and his appetite basically recovered and his spirit was normal. Oral exploration found that gingival swelling had disappeared and mucosa recovered well, so anti-inflammatory drugs were stopped. Continue to take two vitamins orally for another three days.

On the tenth day, I came to the hospital for reexamination. The dog has recovered and stopped taking medicine.

Fig. 5 On the eighth day, the dog basically recovered.

4. Disease prevention

Dogs belong to old dogs, and their physical skills decline in all aspects, and their body resistance is low. Pet owners feed barbed fish, all of which are the causes of the disease. Reducing the intake of hard objects such as bones, fish and fruit shells can prevent this disease. If possible, pay attention to the intake of various vitamins and trace elements, improve the dog's resistance, pay attention to the dog's oral hygiene, and treat the dog's oral diseases in time.

5. Discussion and summary

Nowadays, pet owners regard their dogs as a part of their own families and give them to people regardless of their own characteristics in the dog's diet. Therefore, dogs often eat some foods that are dangerous to them. As a veterinarian, in addition to observing the animal's condition, we should consult carefully to find the correct cause.

The treatment of traumatic oral ulcer is mainly to find out the cause, determine the location of the wound, and the types and properties of foreign bodies. Based on the principle of treating both the symptoms and root causes, foreign bodies should be taken out to relieve inflammation and pain. Vitamins should be supplemented for obvious mucosal damage. Older dogs should ensure the full absorption of vitamins because of their low resistance. After onset, we should pay attention to feeding with liquid food as much as possible to ensure the intake of protein. If the course of the disease lasts for a long time, it is recommended to continue infusion treatment to ensure the normal energy supply of the dog.
