What types of trees need protection from cold in winter?

Many seedling farmers like to transplant seedlings in winter, because plant transpiration is small in winter and seedlings are easy to survive. Transplanting trees in winter is indeed a very good choice, but it should be noted that not all tree species are suitable for transplanting in winter.

Evergreen coniferous tree species such as arborvitae, dragon cypress, black pine, cedar and other small ground cover shrubs planted in winter have a very low survival rate when transplanted in winter.

Because different seedlings have different cold resistance capabilities, some seedlings must pay special attention to cold protection and warmth.

Some seedlings with special circumstances require special care when overwintering:

1. One- to three-year-old seedlings have low lignification and poor cold resistance. Therefore, special protection is needed during winter to prevent stripping and freezing damage;

2. Weak seedlings have poor cold resistance. Therefore, when preparing for overwintering, special care should be taken of "sick" seedlings;

3. Newly planted seedlings in the slow seedling stage have poor cold resistance. As the saying goes, "People move and trees die." One transplant will damage the roots. It is like an operation. It will take some time to recover after the operation. After transplantation, the tree vigor is weak, and its cold resistance is greatly reduced compared with previous years;

4. Seedlings transplanted from warm areas to cold areas also need special care during winter. Seedlings are constantly adapting and getting used to the environment. Although seedlings that grow in warm areas all year round have strong cold tolerance, as individuals have adapted to the warm environment, they will definitely be unacclimated to the cold winter and therefore require special care;

5 , different transplanting seasons, cold resistance performance is also different. The cold tolerance of seedlings transplanted in summer and autumn is worse than that transplanted in spring, so they also need special care when overwintering in the first year.

What are the commonly used cold protection measures?

1. When the external cold resistance performance of the tree species has not reached the internal cold resistance potential, or the tree species is in some special situation, corresponding cold and frost protection measures need to be taken.

According to the scope of the local small environment, a variety of measures are combined to ensure that the protection is in place so that the seedlings can survive the winter safely. There are many common cold and antifreeze measures, but they can generally be summarized into two categories: improving the comfort of the living environment and increasing the health value of trees;

2. Cold and antifreeze measures to improve the comfort of the living environment.

Irrigate antifreeze water and regreening water, set up wind barriers, wrap tree trunks, cultivate soil at the root neck, pile snow at the base of the tree, cover the ground, build crescent-shaped mounds in early spring, knock off snow on branches, etc.;

3. Cold and frost protection measures to improve the healthiness of tree species.

Before freezing, paint the trunk white, spray antifreeze, apply more fertilizer in spring, apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer appropriately in autumn, and perform pruning, etc.
