How to manage the budding seedlings after grafting?
Check survival, unbinding and replanting: Most fruit trees can be checked alive within 10 ~ 15 days after grafting. Where the bud is fresh, the petiole will fall when touched. At the same time, if it is found that the binding is too tight, it should be relaxed or released in time, so as not to affect the growth of thickening and the embedding of binding substances into the cortex and damage the buds. Trees with slow thickening should also be unbound after 3 weeks. Those that don't survive should be replanted in time. If it is too late, the roots can't be peeled off, which will affect the survival.

Cold-proof: The seedlings that survive grafting but have not germinated are called semi-mature seedlings (or sprouts). In areas with severe cold and drought in winter, semi-mature seedlings should be filled with antifreeze water or buried underground to prevent cold. The covering depth should be greater than 6 ~ 10 cm, and it should be removed after thawing in spring.

Anvil cutting: Semi-mature seedlings should be cut off in time before germination in the following spring to promote germination. The position of the cutting anvil is 0.3 ~ 0.5cm above the bud, and the cutting opening should be smooth and slightly inclined to the opposite side of the bud. Do not stay too long or incline to the bud side, so as not to affect the interface healing. Those who don't survive the winter can be repaired by division in spring.

Germination removal: Rootstocks will germinate after cutting and should be removed in time to avoid unnecessary consumption of water and nutrients absorbed by roots and affecting the growth of buds.

Support: in windy areas, support sprouting seedlings. Generally, when the new shoots grow to 5 ~ 8 cm, a small stick should be erected near the rootstock and the new shoots should be tied to the stick. The straps should be ∞-shaped, and the upright posts can make the seedlings grow upright and prevent them from being blown off by the wind. Branches cut during anvil cutting can be inserted next to seedlings as pillars.

In-garden shaping: In order to speed up the formation of young trees, we can use the characteristics of secondary sprouting in the same year to carry out in-garden shaping. Some tree species, such as peaches and oranges, can germinate many times in the same year. Some varieties of apple and pear also have strong secondary bud germination ability. The row spacing of plastic seedlings should be increased, generally not less than 60 ~ 70cm× 25 ~ 30cm. The main means of nursery plastic surgery is coring. The coring period varies with the fixed stem height and local climatic conditions, but it should not be too late, otherwise complete secondary branches cannot be formed. In Bohai Bay area, apple seedlings should generally be picked before the end of June. The tender shoot is about 10 cm, which is in the position where the internodes have been completely expanded but not lignified. Wipe off the new buds sprouting under the plastic belt in time. Only a certain number of secondary shoots are selected as the main branches and central trunk in the plastic belt. Seedlings that have not reached the standard of denucleation should not be forced to denucleate.
