How to Prune and Shape Rhododendron (1)
Abstract: The cultivation of rhododendron plant type is accomplished by pruning and sorting branches. Generally, you need to master the following links: understand the growth ability and germination law of rhododendron. Rhododendron is a kind of flower with strong growth and germination ability, which has the characteristics of rich leaves and buds, wide distribution of bud eyes and more germination. Its bud eyes are distributed all over the body, indicating that it has the ability to sprout new buds all over the body. According to the location of bud eye distribution, it can be divided into terminal bud (located at the top of all branches), axillary bud (located at the junction of petiole base and stem), adventitious bud (bud eye exists in all parts of stem, stem and branch, which is called adventitious bud because of its uncertainty and latency) and foot bud (located at the root in contact with soil surface) (see figure). In general, only the terminal buds and axillary buds are in bud in spring. The germination of adventitious buds and foot buds is irregular. When the conditions are suitable, it may germinate all year round, and it germinates quickly and grows vigorously, but the number is small and irregular. The germination rule of rhododendron is like this. Spring at the end of flowering is the peak of sprouting new buds, and it is this time to form backbone branches all year round. Some late spring buds and adventitious buds will germinate in summer and autumn. Although not as many as spring buds, they may be just the ideal branches needed for plastic surgery, which can be fully utilized and the rest can be removed. New buds will sprout in winter, but the quantity is small and the quality is poor, so they must be pulled out in time. According to the plant growth, grasp the pruning opportunity.
