Pruning time: Gardenia is usually pruned in May-July and 65438+February every year.
Pruning method: when pruning gardenia, it is mainly to remove weak branches, diseased branches, clustered branches, dead branches and overlapping branches, and at the same time control the number of buds and terminal buds on the branches.
First, the pruning time
Gardenia pruning is generally divided into two periods, namely May-July and 65438+February each year. May-July is the growth period of gardenia, when pruning is mainly to remove redundant branches and leaves with poor growth, while 65438+February is the dormant period of gardenia, when pruning is mainly to remove dead branches, diseased branches, overlapping branches, weak branches and residual flowers.
Second, the pruning method
1. Pruning of weak branches: When gardenia plants grow too luxuriantly, the weak branches and branches with poor direction and unfavorable development should be thinned, and the over-dense terminal buds should be removed, and generally 2-3 buds should be left on each branch.
2. Pruning long branches: In the vigorous growth period of gardenia (May-July), the height can be controlled by pruning the long branches at the top to promote the growth of lateral branches, thus increasing the number of flowers.
3. Topping: If it is a small seedling of Gardenia grandiflora, top it at 20cm of the trunk, leaving 3-4 branches. Later, when the branches grow two pairs of leaves, the tops are knocked off to promote the growth of the branches and then let them grow. If it is a small seedling of Gardenia microphylla, it is generally not necessary to top it.
4. Yellow leaf pruning: When the plants have yellow leaves and dead leaves, they should be thinned in time.
5, bud pruning: if it is thick branches, generally 2-3 buds are reserved for each branch. If it is a weak branch, each branch generally retains 1 bud or does not retain buds, and all branches are drained.
Third, the pruning precautions
1. After gardenia pruning, disinfect the wound in time (spray 0. 1% chlorothalonil solution) to avoid wound infection.
2. After gardenia is pruned, it is usually dried before watering, and the wound should be avoided as much as possible when watering.
3. Gardenia in spring should not be cut short, otherwise it will lead to no flowering in that year.
