A Cold Talk about Laozi (anthology 1) Chapter 9 Wealth and Desire: The human heart is insufficient, and the snake swallows the elephant.
The above is the popular original text in translation.

First sentence

㊣: It is better to hold it than to have it.

1、

Once upon a time, an old monk took a new monk down the mountain to fetch water. The monk picked two buckets full, but the old monk's bucket was only seven points full. The monks scoffed:

The old monk ignored it and walked slowly back. Because the monk was too full, he was afraid of splashing before and after, so he had to be careful. Finally, I returned to the temple sweating profusely. As a result, I immediately let my guard down, tripped over the threshold and fell to the ground. What about two buckets of water? Turned into an empty bucket! The old monk looked back and said:

I believe many people will be puzzled after hearing this story. You might say:

Or you might say:

2、

In fact, the people who ask these questions don't know the story at all. Because the story itself is just a fable, it cannot be inferred by realistic logic. In other words, this story is actually equivalent to a prison for some people, which has trapped his cognition alive.

First of all, was the fall really just an accident? We all know:

In this fable, the road up and down the mountain represents the length of your life. You think that the first time a young monk carries water, he can start again tomorrow, just like some people think there is an afterlife.

3、

Secondly, you think this is a fairy tale to deceive children because you think you will never make such a low-level mistake when carrying water. But in this fable:

If you were given a chance to turn the water in the bucket into gold, do you dare to say that you only picked seven cents full?

4、

If we open the book Luoyang Galand? The fourth volume and Shu Wei? "The Queen's Biography", you will find that there are two records in ancient books, which jointly interpret such a story about human nature:

But the restrictive conditions are:

All the civil and military officials cheered, flooded into the state treasury and absorbed in handling. Most of them carry 150 horses, the strong ones can carry 200 horses, and the worst ones can carry 100 horses. One by one, stagger and ugly. In that scene, few people still care about decency, including two most disgraceful people:

Before they went out, they were crushed on the ground, covered with soil, and ate a mouthful of mud, because they overreached. One sprained his ankle and the other twisted his waist. At that time, it also caused a group of people to laugh. People made up a folk song and said:

The point is, because they were insatiable and disgraceful, Hu Taihou took back the silk in a rage, and finally both of them returned empty-handed.

5、

At first glance, I am a little confused about this story. Isn't silk just some silk? What's so rare? Later, I found that during the Six Dynasties:

At that time, thieves stole silk instead of coins. At that time, local tyrants showed off their wealth, not money, but silk. Even in the Tang dynasty:

It can be seen that silk and silk are ancient and present coins, and coins have really replaced silk and silk. According to Li Jiannong's Economic History of Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui and Tang Dynasties, it happened at least after the middle of Tang Dynasty.

6、

So in the Northern Wei Dynasty, how much was a silk worth? The biography of Northern History Xing Luanchuan records:

It means:

In other words:

So taking 200 silks is equivalent to taking 100 sheep.

Now we finally know why all civil and military officials work as hard as chicken blood. Only Wang Rong and Li Chong were injured on the spot, but we don't know how many people fell down on their way home. At that time, there was only one honest man named Cui Guang, who could keep a clear head in the face of money. Only this poor but ambitious Cui Guang, who is not greedy and not carried away by money, symbolically took away two horses.

Hu Taihou asked:

Cui Guang replied:

You see, that's why the old monk only brought seven full portions of water. Because once the heart is full of desire, wisdom will be expelled from the mind. Only when we are not satisfied can we always keep an open space and keep an initial heart.

In fact, Wang Rong and Li Chong were lucky, but they were slightly injured and lost some money. As long as they rest for a while, their lives can still return to normal track. And some people may not be so lucky after falling down on the road of chasing desire, and it is difficult to get up again.

7、

For example, in the19th century, the United States developed the west in full swing. To put it bluntly, it is to rob the Indian land. At that time, the land was vast and sparsely populated, and the land price was very cheap, so the way of selling land was also very special:

In other words, you can divide as much land as you can run on horseback in a day. In fact, in the early days of China's entry into the Central Plains in the Qing Dynasty, the emperor shunzhi once asked the children of the Eight Banners to run horse races. So what should we do when there are not enough horses in America? And run around. So there is such a thought-provoking story:

Regrettably, when he managed to run back to the starting point, he fell to the ground because of fatigue and died on the spot. The land seller had to bury him hastily. Where did he finally occupy? It's only the size of a coffin. Later, inspired by this, Tolstoy wrote a short story "How much land does a person need", satirizing the insatiable psychology in human nature.

8、

Finally, why tell these three stories? In fact, these three stories represent the three States of human beings in the pursuit of desire.

Why do we stumble on the road of desire? The root cause is four words:

For most people, in most cases, they don't have Cui Guang's concentration and self-knowledge. They always unconsciously overestimate their abilities and always think that they can carry on, carry on and run. But through the ages, countless facts and repeated proofs, people will always be overwhelmed by their own desires. So Lao tze persuade way:

1, Taiping Guangji? Volume 495? Zazo

The second sentence

If you are sharp, you can't keep it for a long time.

1、

Sharp weapon, can't stay sharp forever. Why?

But despite this, sharp weapons themselves always instinctively develop in the direction of passivation, just as stones thrown into the sky always instinctively fall back to the ground when constrained by gravity. Therefore, anything man-made will not last long.

2、

We all know that there is a law in physics, that is, the second law of thermodynamics, also known as the law of entropy increase, which can be summarized in one sentence:

Everything in the universe starts from a certain value and structure and irreversibly develops into chaos and waste.

For example:

In other words, everything respects a basic law:

Why? The fundamental reason is that the orderly state is artificially shaped, and the disorderly state is the true face of everything.

3、

It is precisely because all the orderly things in this world are deliberately created by people or animals at a certain stage that they cannot last long. Because everything born at one time node will inevitably be destroyed at another time node. That is to say:

Buddhists call this phenomenon "origin", and it is precisely because everything is fleeting and has no eternal essence of its own that Buddhists call it "sexual emptiness", which is the origin of sexual emptiness.

3、

Of course, this is the conclusion from "chaos" to the extreme. If we take "order" as the basic point and push it to the extreme, it will lead to the other extreme:

The essence of this mentality is the extreme pursuit of order, certainty and being able to maintain a certain "sharp" state forever, but the result is always counterproductive. The fundamental reason lies in:

What's more, "sharp"-a state of extreme order, it is difficult to reach the sky if you want to keep it forever. Even if you barely maintain a "keen" state for a few years, you will spend a lot of time and energy, but you will lose your dominant position, so Nietzsche, a philosophical madman, said a famous saying:

4、

Let's give an example:

Even if it is possible, it is not worth it! Because he exceeds the second and third place in every exam-he needs to pay great energy and cost. Although he can keep the first place for a long time, it is actually a bad consumption of personal mental health and living standards. After going to college, he will inevitably rebound, from being tired of learning to being depressed and even committing suicide.

This is what Lao Tzu said:

5、

Give another example:

So from the perspective of human biology:

Therefore, some players often faint or even die suddenly on the stage of bodybuilding competition. It has been circulating on the Internet that Bruce Lee's body fat rate is as low as 3%. Although exaggerated and fabricated by the media, there is no doubt about one thing:

At present, Bruce Lee's cause of death is the closest medical statement to the truth: sudden epileptic death, which is a disease that will lead to sudden death due to decreased heart rate and decreased lung function even without epileptic symptoms. It is worth mentioning that:

Perhaps, Bruce Lee died suddenly because of his low body fat rate and overwork, which induced epilepsy and led to cardiac arrest.

5、

Bruce Lee's death, in essence, is due to the pursuit of the ultimate "sharpness" of the body, and ultimately because of excessive energy consumption, it is impossible to sustain life. This is why Lao Tzu warned people that:

Third sentence

Happiness from now on, can't stay.

1、

When we understand the law of entropy increase, we will understand that this is the simplest truth:

Therefore, since ancient times, China has been said to be "richer than three generations" and "beaten by a gentleman for five generations".

2、

1943, Nie Yuntai, the grandson of Zeng Guofan, wrote a book called "The Law of Protecting the Rich". At that time, it was just serialized in Shenbao, which caused great social repercussions. Although there is hatred for the rich in the book, the description of the rise and fall of the rich and the poor in the book is an objective and true record. The first paragraph says this:

What is the reason? Nie Yuntai continued.

Nie Yuntai lived in a wealthy family, so he had contact with all the dignitaries in the society, but what he saw and heard among the rich and nobles was shocking. He witnessed a large number of rich people, ups and downs, and finally his descendants degenerated into street people.

In fact, every page of the twenty-four histories shows these fickle films. I saw it in the National Library of Zhou Dynasty as early as two thousand years ago, so Taoist figures in all previous dynasties did not object to "Happy Ever After".

3、

There was a Taoist priest named Zhao Kun in the Tang Dynasty. Maybe you are not familiar with his name, but he has a famous disciple in China-the great poet Li Bai. Their guidance is also called:

He wrote a book called "Long and Short Classics", which criticized two examples of emperors gathering wealth, which is worth pondering.

4、

Dr. Rui Liang couldn't stand it, so he protested:

We all know the later story. Zhou Liwang was profligate and unpopular, and was finally United by the common people and rushed to the barren hills.

Only a man named childe became a father came in to congratulate him:

Wei Wenhou not only didn't get angry, but turned grief into joy and was quoted as a kind word.

5、

These two examples generally reflect the Taoist concept of wealth:

This can actually be regarded as an ideological principle of entropy increase:

This view of Taoism has a great influence on China, so everyone in China knows a saying:

The protagonist of this sentence is talking about wealth. However, when humans are generally alive, they will never wake up, including you and me.

6、

Of course, not only you and me, but also some great historical figures, such as Alexander the Great (356- 323 BC), who ran around all his life and was rich in the world. But before he died, he left three famous and weird wishes:

Alexander said that his men were confused.

Alexander's three wishes are nothing more than eight words describing the Tao Te Ching:

Fourth sentence

㊣' s wealth and arrogance left their own accusations.

1、

There are few rich and arrogant people in the world. Why? Because the richer a person is, the more sunshine he sees and the more smiling faces he sees. Over time, he naturally became proud.

Fan Ju asked:

Childe seeks said:

What do you mean? It means:

Obviously, childe seeks more pessimistic than Lao zi, summed up in one sentence is:

Yes, how many changes have taken place since ancient times, and the changes are only from generation to generation, and the human nature of seeking profit has never changed. Whenever "humanity" meets "wealth", it will repeat the same mistakes. Even if you know that it is a moth, you will still move forward wave after wave. Few people want to learn from history.

As a generation of Qin generals, I have heard about this for a long time and thank humbly:

You see, this is human nature, hopeless human nature. Even if we get a very precious thing, we can only choose to use "thousands of dollars" as a reference to set off the value of "precious things"

2、

This law of childe seeks tells us:

Zi Gong, a student of Confucius, was a rich man in the Spring and Autumn Period. It took many years to smooth the edges and corners, and one day he couldn't help showing off to Confucius and said:

Zi Gong wanted to borrow the teacher's mouth to turn a corner and praise himself, but Confucius replied with a smile:

It seems that the most difficult thing is that wealth can remain modest and studious, not overstep, not break the rules, and be polite to everyone. So what if a rich man can neither remain modest nor proud, but is ambitious and domineering? Quite simply, Shi Chong, the richest man in ancient times, is a warning.

3、

As we all know, Shi Chong, a rich man in Jin Dynasty, made his fortune by robbing merchants, so he was rich all over the world and never frowned when he spent money. The toilet at home is more luxurious than the bedroom of ordinary officials, and the clothes of servants at home are more fashionable than the emperor. The story of his struggle with Wang Kai is a household name and everyone knows it. So what is the ending of Shi Chong? Four words:

In 300 AD, Sima Lun, the king of Zhao, staged a coup and sent troops to Shi Chong House. When disaster struck, Shi Chong naively thought that he would be exiled at most, and there would be no worries about his life. It was not until I was on the way to the vegetable market by prison car that I suddenly realized that I was on my way to the grave. He was so angry that he swore:

The guard who escorted him retorted:

According to historical records, Shi Chong wanted to refute, but he couldn't say a word to defend himself. Why? Actually, it's very simple. At that moment, he finally figured out the cause of his death. On the surface, it was because he didn't want to hand over the concubine Lvzhu, but in essence, it was because he was cruel, high-profile and ostentatious, which hurt too many people and offended too many people, thus causing countless jealousy and hatred. Besides, he is rich. If he doesn't die, it will be hard for the government and the people to let go.

The great historian Sima Guang clearly saw this, so he warned him when educating his son:

In a word, Shi Chong died of "wealth and arrogance".

4、

There is a description of the relationship between people and money in "University", which is particularly accurate:

It means:

Unfortunately, not many people are willing to listen to the ancient teachings. "Benevolent people are not rich, rich people are heartless" (5) is still the universal state and mentality of today's society, and Lao Tzu, as a master of human nature, has already predicted this universal law of human nature in the library, so he will warn people of insight:

1, Warring States Policy? Zhao Zesan "

2. The Book of Jin Volume 33, Chuan San

3. Sima Guang? Train frugality to show health? 》

4. Book of Rites University

5. "Mencius On Teng Wengong (Yang Huo)
