Key points of winter pruning: cut off all auxiliary branches and new shoots.
New shoots-branches that grow this spring.
Secondary branches-branches that grow from the axils of new branches in summer and autumn.
Old branches-branches before last year
Grapes of every race grow differently. In order to facilitate understanding, several representative branches are selected to demonstrate. The first kind-the new branch has lateral branches, and the lateral branches are secondary branches. Pruning method: cut off all the secondary branches and leave three or four winter buds for new shoots to cut off.
Special note: the incision of the new tip should not be next to the bud, but 3cm. The branches of cutting are as follows:
The second kind-there are no side branches on the new branches, and the auxiliary branches grow at the top. Pruning method: leave three or four winter buds for new shoots to cut off, no matter how long, cut off the top auxiliary branches. In the picture below, this new shoot has no lateral branches after coring in summer, and only a secondary branch grows at the top. After pinching the secondary branch, the secondary branch grows at the top, and now it grows to this length after repeated coring.
Pruning: Leave four winter buds on the new branches, and cut off all the branches above 1 meter. The branches of cutting are as follows:
The third kind-the new bud is stunted and very thin. Pruning method: this new shoot will not bear fruit, so it should be cut off.
The new shoots are too thin, so cut them off. (the old branches at the lower end have no buds, at the top. Cut it off together. ) The branches cut are as follows:
The fourth type-cultivated main vine. Pruning method: all the auxiliary shoots on the main vine are cut off, and a pruning section is reduced from the top of the main vine.
The following picture shows the main vine that has been preserved. All the subsidiary branches have been cut off, and the top part has been cut off from the coring position (the subsidiary branches at the top cannot be preserved after coring).
The main vines after pruning are as follows:
