9 Steps to Set Life Goals (Guide)
If you search for "life goals" in Baidu, you will find nearly 70 million results. If you Google "life goals", you will see 3 billion results.

There is a reason for this. It is generally believed that having clear goals is the key to success in all fields of life; Relationship, career, health, finance, psychology, study, growth, career, you can name it.

In fact, setting goals has many advantages …

They will support you to live an exciting, fulfilling and meaningful life.

They give you focus and goals.

They help you decide what you want and what is most important to you.

They will tell you where you are going and how much progress you have made.

They will affect the important decisions in your life, give you a direction and keep you down to earth.

They point out the direction of your life and make you think clearly when making decisions.

They promote motivation and inspiration.

They will accelerate your achievements and give you a sense of satisfaction.

That's why I get into the habit of setting goals regularly and recommend others to do so. In fact, as long as I can remember, my wife and I will sit down at the beginning of each year to make goals and intentions for the coming year. When the children are old enough to attend, they also begin to attend this important ceremony with us.

Goals have a power. Even if you don't know how you will achieve them, at least you know what you want to achieve, which will help you find a way.

Think about the last time you had a clear and convincing goal. How did you feel? How does this affect your happiness, energy and success?

People set goals from the beginning. Then, Edwin A. Locke introduced the theory of goal setting into the mainstream in the mid-1960s. Since then, we have been obsessed with setting goals.

I have been thinking, what else can I tell you about goal setting? Among the nearly 3 billion resources in your hand, which target methods are not shared? Although I want to say that I have some new methods or innovative wisdom to share. But I didn't.

In fact, the problem is not that there is not enough content or information about goal setting. The problem is that we read articles, browse social media, listen to podcasts and watch videos, and then take no action.

It is not enough to know that goals are important or how to set them. You must be clear about your goals, write them down and take action.

As an enterprise trainer, coach and consultant, I understand that it doesn't matter how much knowledge or information a person has. In order for them to learn by going up a flight of stairs, they must apply it. This is the real value.

So today, I won't give you more content, I will take you through a process.

My goal? When you finish writing this article, you will have at least one goal to support you to live your dream life.

The following is a step-by-step guide to setting and achieving life goals:

Pick up a pencil and paper, or open the notes on your mobile phone and get ready for action.

Step 1: Choose the most important aspect of your life.

Think about a part of your life that you want to achieve more success or greater satisfaction. Focus on what you feel is lacking and what you want to change or improve. This may include your occupation, finance, business, spirit, personal growth, health, family, interpersonal relationship, social life or attitude.

If you need help, take a look at the wheel of life below. In the range of 1- 10, rate your current satisfaction in various fields:

The closer to the center line, the worse that area is; The closer you get to this line, the more successful and happy you will feel in your life.

If there is an area you want to focus on, then you can take the second step.

Step 2: Think about what you want in this area of your life.

If you don't know what you want, how can you expect it

Imagine you in six months. What do you need to do to make yourself feel happy, successful or satisfied in this life?

Here are some suggestions to help you get started:

Career-Do you want a raise or promotion, find a new role, undertake a big project, improve your leadership, change jobs or retire?

Finance-maybe you want to be financially free, pay off debts, buy a house, invest or increase your income?

Personal growth-do you want to improve self-awareness, build self-confidence or self-esteem, deal with old injuries or cure them? Or do you want to learn a new skill and get a higher degree, or go back to school to continue your study?

Health-Do you want to be healthier and more energetic? Maybe you want to run a marathon, exercise more regularly, eat better, meditate or practice mindfulness.

Interpersonal relationship-Do you want a loving relationship, be a better parent, be more compassionate, increase your social circle and spend more time with your friends?

Once you know what you want, you can enter the third step.

Step 3: Set goals

You can set yourself various goals.

Short-term goals, long-term goals, lifelong goals.

Progressive small goals and bold big goals (BHAG).

Skill goals (learning skateboarding or learning a new language)

Behavior goal (more patience, kindness or confidence)

What do you want (owning a house or a car, making friends, finding a new job or occupation)?

What do you want to do (skydiving, spending time with your family, exercising, losing weight or traveling to Australia)

The experience you want to enjoy (have you always wanted to skydive, run a marathon or paint? )

What do you want to give or how do you want to contribute? Think about your time, talent, energy or money. Studies have proved that people who give are happier, so if you want to be happier, set more goals for giving.

What kind of person do you want to be? Happy, confident, successful, kind, caring, grateful, generous, satisfied, stable, enthusiastic, creative and interesting?

Last year, I wanted to be more relaxed-less nervous and more natural. Our family has set a goal to make everyone more observant, caring and helpful. One of my daughters wants to be more patient and the other wants to be more focused.

What goals do you want to set for yourself? Remember, there is no right answer and there is no one-size-fits-all method. Now write it down. Then, go to the next step.

Step 4: Check your goals.

Make sure your goals are wise (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound).

You must also ensure that:

Determine your goals: Why are your goals important to you? If you don't know why, you will be distracted and confused. Your goals must be meaningful and relevant.

Have a strong desire to achieve the goal. The key words here are you and desire. You must really want to achieve this goal. It can't be for someone else. Ask yourself, "Does this goal support the life I am trying to create?"

I believe this is possible. You may not know how it will happen, but in order to achieve your goal, some parts of your heart need to believe that it is possible. That's why it's important to set goals. Goals can inspire you, but not so big that you feel impossible.

If you are sure that your goal is wise, know your reasons, have a strong desire to achieve it, and truly believe that it is possible, you can move on to the next step.

Step 5: Imagine the result.

Clarity is key. We all know the power of imagination. Imagine that you have achieved your goal.

Take a moment to close your eyes and imagine. Walk into the scene as much as possible and feel it. What did you notice? After achieving this goal, what did you see, hear and feel? When you reach your goal, really put yourself in the power you can feel.

Next, it's time to make your action plan.

Step 6: Make a plan to achieve the goal.

At least, take the first step. Action will enable you to achieve your goal. Small actions will eventually have big results.

Make as many plans as possible to achieve your goal. The bigger the goal, the bigger the plan. But keep it simple.

With the first step and action plan to achieve your goal, you are almost ready to start. But before that, you must also recognize your obstacles.

Step 7: Predict obstacles

When you know what will hold you back, even if things don't go according to your expectations, you are unlikely to go off track.

What will stop you from achieving your goal? Consider factors such as distraction, procrastination, inattention, environment, underestimation of time and resources.

For example, if you want to exercise three days a week, maybe you can foresee that work travel will be your obstacle. How do you make different plans for these weeks? Maybe you want to go back to school, but you are not sure whether you can get the financial aid you need. Solve the problem first, or come up with your plan.

Once you realize the obstacles you will encounter and have a coping strategy, it's time to start.

Step 8: Take the first step.

Remember that action plan? What is your first step? Let's leave now.

The real decision is measured by the new actions you take. If you don't take action, you haven't made a real decision.

If you really want to achieve your goal, take action now. Today. Pick up your phone. Call this number. Send e-mail. Join a dating site. Start looking for a job. Go to the gym and call your friends. Arrange it on your calendar. Here we go. There is no better time than now.

Step 9: Stay on track.

In order to achieve your goal, you must persist. Think about the goals, resolutions or commitments that you have always adhered to. What kept you going? Why did you keep it? What factors are at work?

In a study conducted by Dominican University in California, Dr. Gail Matthews, a professor of psychology, came to the following conclusion.

First, write down your goal and put it where you can see it. A statistic I read shows that 23% people have forgotten their New Year's resolutions. I really forgot!

My sister often talks about her goal of selling the company. She wrote the auction price and date on post-it notes and posted them on the mirror, which she could see every day. It constantly reminds her of the North Star and what is most important to her. This keeps her focused and on the right track. For this reason, our family goals are nailed to the bulletin board in the kitchen.

Let's talk about responsibility.

Matthews found that more than 70% of the participants send the latest news to their friends every week, saying that they have successfully achieved their goals (completely achieved their goals, or more than half of them have been completed), while only 35% of the participants have not written down their goals.

Other studies have also proved this point. Share your goals with others. Find a responsible partner to keep you going, or send an update to your friends once a week.

Create short-term rewards for yourself and associate them with your checkpoints. For example, if your goal is to lose 10 pounds by the end of the year, you may want to buy yourself a new pair of running shoes or make yourself a spa halfway.
