Dozens of emerald-bearing pegmatite dikes have been found in Malipo Emerald Deposit, Yunnan Province, with a distribution range of nearly 4 square kilometers and an exposed height difference of nearly 200 meters. Malipo emerald deposit belongs to pegmatite emerald deposit. The ore distribution of this kind of deposit is often banded, from the vein wall to the center, it is generally feldspar zone, chronotropic zone and tourmaline zone. Emerald is generally produced in the center and associated with scheelite, tin ore and other ores, so it is relatively difficult to mine. According to the investigation, the emerald-bearing pegmatite dikes in Malipo County are controlled by fault structures and arranged almost in parallel. The ore body is 20-280m long, 0.2-1.2m wide and1.5m local. Ore bodies are veined and lenticular in fine-grained mica granite.
Gem-grade emeralds in Malipo, Yunnan Province are generally medium emerald green (that is, tender grass green), a few are light green grass green and light blue green, and some crystals are yellow-green, with bright colors and less blue. The crystals are hexagonal columns, most of which are slender, mainly light green, transparent to translucent, and the columnar crystals are regular. The crystals are self-shaped ~ semi-self-shaped hexagonal columns, plate columns and crystal clusters. It often coexists with white wine yellow massive and spotted scheelite, black tourmaline, metal sulfide (arsenopyrite, pyrite), microcline, timely and mica. Some emerald mineral crystals are banded with light green inside and medium green outside, often with horizontal and vertical growth lines. Mineral crystals have glass luster, conchoidal fracture. Emerald is mainly composed of chromium, vanadium and iron, and emerald with poor transparency has high iron content. Emerald contains BeO (98 ~ 99%), C2O30.2 1 ~ 0.4% and V2O50.06 ~ 0.02 1%. Inclusions and inclusions are mainly fibrous acicular black tourmaline, flaky mica, colorless tabular plagioclase, arsenopyrite, opaque liquid inclusions and pinnate fracture inclusions. There are many cracks and the development of cracks is the main reason for the poor quality of Yunnan emerald.
Colombia is the most famous producer of emeralds in the world, and the quality of emeralds produced locally is recognized as the best. Malipo Emerald is comparable to Colombian Emerald in color difference and quality, and it is valuable. 1996 was named "Emerald of China" by former Minister of Geology and Mineral Resources Song Ruixiang because of its unique deposit type and excellent gem quality. Xiong Shenghua, a national appraiser, believes that Chinese emeralds have the best green color in the world today, which is not inferior to the world-famous Colombian emeralds and can be called the king emeralds.
