What is obsidian and what is its function?
Obsidian is a common black gem, and its main chemical composition is naturally occurring silica, which is usually black. Obsidian is one of the gems for making beads and Buddha statues. People like to use it as a material to make all kinds of exquisite mascots and amulets to ward off evil spirits. There is an auspicious meaning of praying for Bodhisattva to bless all beings and be safe and harmless. In our traditional folk customs, we also like to use obsidian to make exquisite handicraft decorative ornaments of various legendary mascots. We believe that all kinds of mascots carved with obsidian, if placed in houses where people do good deeds and accumulate virtue, will have a strong role in attracting wealth to ward off evil spirits and keeping the town safe. At present, most obsidian jewelry is produced in North America and Mexico, and the national stone of Mexico is obsidian.
