? I graduated from a regular 2 1 1 university majoring in design, but after I got a job in jewelry design in Shenzhen, I found myself no different from zero-based design!
I didn't say this to attract attention, but really reflected my feelings and mentality at that time. What the school studied was design theory, such as three elements of design, hand-drawn expression of design, design research, design psychology, and various cases of design masters. When you really start to engage in industrial design, you will find that many things are unnecessary. Work really touches jewelry design, just like another new and difficult customs clearance level opened by the game upgrade. As for the study of design major, it is equal to the entry level of the game.
Of course, what we learn in school doesn't mean that we can't use everything. At least the most basic hand-drawing and basic aesthetics will not be lost. Compared with this, it is a little better than zero foundation. But even so, when I started as a designer in a company, my hand-drawn drawings were like this (figure) (sorry for myself).
And the standard hand-drawing that enterprises need is like this. (figure)
The gap between them lies not only in the standardization of design drawings, but also in the understanding of the design concept of commercial jewelry.
For example, studying in school, drawing renderings, pure hand-drawing, drawing basic shapes or perspectives with lines, which are stereoscopic and expressive. Even if you pass the exam, the painting space is fully open and half open, and the minimum is A3, so you can play freely. (figure)
The design of commercial jewelry is different. How small is the pendant? Calculated by mm, the overall metal is 1g ~ 2g, and the actual paper diameter is at most 10mm, and the largest is just the size of a bracelet. The length of plane expression is only 60 ~ 70 mm, and rings and earrings are smaller. And it has not been included in the cost accounting of the products sold by the company. If the design is too big and heavy and the style is not accepted by the domestic market, it will fail.
When designing in school, we pay more attention to the creativity of design and consider the innovation of design, so the use of modeling, materials and technology is more bold, imaginative and experimental. In an enterprise, the dimensions to be considered in design are broad, except for innovation, realizability, market acceptance and cost control. This is why when we look at the works of school students, we often feel that there are more creativity and less practicality; Looking at commercial design again, I feel that the theme and design techniques are formalized and single, and there is insufficient innovation. This is a common pain point in domestic commercial jewelry design.
? Put it in the mouth of a design instructor who led us into this industry. It is
What I said above is mainly the feeling of design concept. Then there is the naked bug about my design skills. Well, I hate bringing up the past. )
? Until now, I still feel that my habit of drawing is not good, and I can only draw well if I can't draw according to the standard. Mainly from the beginning, I haven't learned to use tools.
At that time, when I looked at tools, I really didn't see so many novel tools except pens. Especially all kinds of rulers. (figure)
? So, at first, I didn't know what these rulers were for. I thought I could just draw a standard gem shape. In fact, hand-drawing is a very simple way to make line drawing look good, with the help of a ruler. This is also an important reason why non-professional apprentices can become monks, learn jewelry design by hand and get on the road smoothly.
For example, a hand-shaking party, the line draft is drawn with a pencil, but it will be marked with tools, and the effect drawing will be very round and smooth, that is, it will rise up to a higher level in an instant. (figure)
I found two examples of lines that I practiced before, so I put them here first to illustrate the importance of beautiful lines for jewelry design. The beautiful design drawings we saw on the Internet are mainly for display. In fact, the ordinary business style is quite satisfactory. Just send two pictures for comparison.
Although tools are tools, with the help of tools, I can design jewelry conveniently and help me finish my design works quickly and well. Another useful tool is copy paper (translucent sulfuric acid paper). I really didn't need it at the beginning! So even when I draw symmetrical patterns, I still insist on hand-drawing until my tutor teaches me that I can cover half of the patterns and sketch with a pencil, and then cover one side of the pencil on the other white paper and scrape it with my fingers, so that I can copy the traces of the patterns marked by the pencil (I am even more embarrassed to finish writing this ~)
(figure)
? Painting tools, after a period of use, can naturally be used freely. Sadly, people know little about the nature and characteristics of materials.
? So, one day, several of us were discussing with our tutor that if the metal is colored, it will fade a little after a long time. The instructor said that even K-King would do the same. I followed the rhetorical question, k yellow, k red? So gold shouldn't? The tutor gave me a strange look. In an instant, I understood, so did gold. What is gold?
? You see, sometimes, if you don't have a deep understanding of basic common sense, you will be cheated quietly at the critical moment.
? When designing, pay attention to the fact that the metal has a certain thickness, which is too thin and easy to be perforated. When setting gems, pay attention to leave enough thickness, and pay attention to the product composition not to be too sharp, and the gems should be included in the inlay as much as possible to avoid revealing the bottom ... and so on, which reflects the designer's basic skills and maturity in detail design. I am willing to study hard, but unfortunately, there is no other way but to sum up experience and observe more in the design work. Unless, you have a strict and experienced tutor who is willing to give everything for others.
Traditional hand-made carving wax printing relies heavily on drawings, because many carving wax masters can't actually draw, so symmetry, thickness, radian and so on need to be particularly precise. The drawings of the older generation of designers strive for perfection, even a line embedded with several diamonds can be counted. I can't find the drawings to show now, but I can only regret it.
At present, enterprises and factories basically use computer gem cad to start printing, and the accuracy requirements of hand-drawing have been greatly reduced. Through computer communication, designers and printmakers can negotiate design drawings with products in printing, thus solving problems such as surface radian that is difficult to express on hand-drawn paper.
? The tools are getting better and better, but the design is not necessarily getting better and better. Domestic designers need diversified and fresh external stimuli too much. Every year in March and September, there will be a grand jewelry exhibition at the Wan Chai Convention and Exhibition Center in Hong Kong. Basically, I spend at least one day every year. It is really refreshing to be able to broaden one's horizons, get in touch with jewelry designs from all over the world, appreciate the design aesthetics with different styles in different countries, secretly learn from others, and inspire one's tired and paralyzed inspiration.
? When I first started, I wished that I could stay in the exhibition all the time, that is, stroll, walk and see, to fill my fantasy of jewelry design and my desire to learn jewelry design. Going to see it every year will have a different feeling.
? Speaking of this, it has been close to my five-year career. Now I'm fooling around at home, but I can't neglect my writing skills. I draw whenever I have an idea. I regret not getting in touch earlier, so that I may be able to catch the difficulties, embarrassments and hardships I encountered when I entered the business at an early stage and record them with my clumsy fingers.
? Since I began to study jewelry design, I am glad that I am still a designer! In this way, in the future, I will not be conceited and arrogant; Because I have learned a lot about jewelry design, I will not sell myself short and define myself as ignorant. In the following many times, I will gradually share my experience and feelings in jewelry design in my notes, and I will definitely share my notes.
I hope to give myself a sweet cause and effect in this way.
