Ponte Vecchio (Italian) is a stone arch bridge built in the Middle Ages, located in Florence, Italy, across the Arno River. There are still shops on the bridge so far. The shops on the bridge were originally butcher shops, but now they are mostly jewelry stores and souvenir shops. This old bridge is also considered as the oldest stone arch bridge with closed arch shoulders in Italy. This ancient bridge is one of the famous landmarks in Florence.
Architectural history
The old bridge spans the narrowest part of the Arno River. A bridge was built here in ancient Rome, when Cassia Road crossed the Arno River. The piers in Roman times were made of stone, while the superstructure of the bridge was made of wood.
This bridge first appeared in historical documents in 996, but was later destroyed by floods in117, so it was rebuilt as a stone bridge. The bridge was destroyed by the flood again at 1333. Giovanni Villani, a historian in Florence at that time, recorded in his book Nuova Cronica that there were only two piers left in the center of the bridge.
The bridge was rebuilt on 1345. Taddeo Gardi later rebuilt the bridge according to the records of architect George vasari (he recorded the original design of the bridge).
During World War II, the old bridge was not destroyed by the Germans, it is said that it was because of Hitler's orders.
The old bridge was seriously damaged in the flood of 1966 Arno River.
The damaged buildings at both ends of the old bridge have been rebuilt, and the original and modern designs have been combined.
Building structure
This old bridge can be divided into three parts, with an arch span of 30 meters (98 feet) in the middle and 27 meters (88 feet) on both sides. The height of the arch is between 3.5 and 4.4 meters (1 1? Foot to 14? Between the feet), the increase rate is 5: 1.
There are many shops on this ancient bridge, and businessmen often appear here. These commercial sales must be approved by Bargello (police agency). People can see the shops set up in17th century from the upstream.
