1 25th, 1905, when the workers in Primir mining area in South Africa finished their work, Frederick Wells, the site supervisor, was carrying out the last inspection of the day. Suddenly, a worker came out out out of breath, pulled him to a pit and showed him the objects buried in the mud and shining in the sunset. Wells guessed that it was probably the worker who deliberately put the glass in order to miss Doby (workers often play this game). But he still walked into the pit, dug it out and took out the largest gem-grade diamond in history.

The original stone is 2 x 2 .5 x 4 inches in size and weighs about 1.33 pounds, which is almost flawless. Sir Thomas Cleland, the founder of the mine, was named after cleland, who happened to cry on the day of the mine inspection.

The Prime Minister of Tanzania, Luis Posa, persuaded the Tanzanian government to buy this stone (about10 million US dollars) and presented it to King Edward VII of England to thank him for allowing Tanzania to establish a constitution.

The original stone was cut into nine big gems, ninety-six small gems, and about 19.5 carats of unpolished gravel. Two of the largest pieces were reserved for the decoration of the king's crown, and the rest were used as a reward for accel's salary by Asser company.
