Is the light passing through the crystal only birefringent?
Birefringence:

The phenomenon that a light beam incident on an anisotropic crystal is split into two beams and refracted in different directions. They are linearly polarized light with mutually perpendicular vibration directions.

When light propagates in a crystal, it is no longer parallel to the optical axis. Because of the different propagation speeds of E light and O light, two images of light with different refractive indices appear. This phenomenon is called birefringence.
