Aceh's piety
Aceh people are mostly Malays and devout Muslims, distributed in lowlands and adjacent hilly areas, accounting for the majority of the population. Gajo people live in the highlands. They are also Muslims, but they belong to Bartak. The staple food is rice and corn, sweet potato, yam and beans. Pepper, dried coconut, betel nut and rubber are the main export materials. These minerals are bauxite and coal. There are several oil fields and increasingly important natural gas wells along the eastern coast; Lhokseumawe is gradually developing into a terminal for oil and liquefied natural gas to speed up mineral development. Industry and handicrafts include processed food, textiles, metal utensils, gold jewelry, honeysuckle silk jewelry, wood carving and metal carving. Uleelheue and Simawei in Houlle are the main ports in Aceh, but large ships can use Sabang Freeport on wei Island (80km (50 miles) north of Ellehee in Houlle). All three ports were destroyed by the tsunami in 2004. Banda Aceh (formerly 〔Kutaradja〕) is the largest city in this region, located 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the mouth of the Aceh River, and there is a highway connecting Medan, the capital of North Sumatra Province. There are several wildlife reserves in Aceh, including Mount Liusel National Park. The area is 5 1 937 square kilometers (20,053 square miles). Population: 3,930,905 (2000); 4,309,600(2005)。
